Predictions for XII

I am extremely sure that the term "birds of prey" was used at least once.
This is what I find:
UHURA: I was tracking solar systems and I picked up an emergency transmission.
GAILA: Really?
UHURA: Yeah, from a Klingon prison planet.
GAILA: No?
UHURA: Yeah. A Klingon armada was destroyed. Forty-seven ships.

--------------------
MCCOY: Two Klingon vessels have entered the neutral zone and are locking weapons on us.
------
MCCOY: Three more Klingon warbirds decloaking and targeting our ship. I don't suppose this is a problem either.
------
KIRK: Hmm... arm photons, prepare to fire on the Klingon warbirds.
------
KIRK: Fire on all enemy ships. One photon each should do it, so don't waste ammunition.
CADET: Target locked and acquired on all warbirds. Firing.
CADET: All ships destroyed, Captain.
--------------------

KIRK: [...] The Kelvin attack took place on the edge of Klingon space and at twenty-three hundred hours last night, there was an attack. Forty-seven Klingon warbirds destroyed by a Romulan, sir. [...]
I think "ship" is used another time or two to refer to Klingon vessels, but I don't find "bird of prey".

Edit: The transcript I used as reference can be found here. Other than the odd typo, I've found no errors yet.

I stand corrected. Thank you.

... And let's also note - not a "battlecruiser" in the lot of them. ;)

what if it's just a quiet drama about Spock coming to grips with the death of his mother, and Kirk brooding about losing Uhura to Spock?

No threats, no battles, just good character studies.

No? too experimental?

star trek is not 90210

It's not, but post-TOS Trek tended to have some great character-driven episodes. In my opinion, TNG's "Family:, DS9's "It's Only a Paper Moon", and Enterprise's "Home" were pretty solid episodes that didn't rely on anomalies or traps or battles to get through. Coincidentally, each of these episodes is about the aftermath of incredibly traumatic events -- the loss of a homeworld would certainly count as that.

With that said, I don't see Kirk brooding about losing Uhura, simply because 1. He lost her before he joined the Academy and 2. A man who hits on that many people is going to get shot down a lot. It's the numbers game, like Babe Ruth: he had the highest batting average of his time but also the most strikeouts.

I predict this. Lots of it.

The photo at left was taken with a zoom lens without a lens hood. The photo on the right was taken with the same lens in the same location, but with a properly designed lens hood. A lens hood can make the difference between a disaster and a good photo.

I'm personally hoping for the stuff on the right...
--------

As for the major plot, I'm really hoping it doesn't have to do with some huge Earth or Federation threat... There has to be some external threat resulting in action, but it doesn't have to be giant, all world ending, to be riviting. It just has to be a good story.

I'm actually a big fan of lens flair, as it adds realism to a scene. Yes, Abrams used it a bit too much, but it created a totally different visual look than the 10 movies that came before. A clear, unobstructed view makes for a dull picture, not necessarily a "good" one.

J.J. Abrams and co. are non-traditional storytellers. I would expect to be surprised at how they go about telling the next story. The one thing Abrams insisted with his first film was that it had to be "cool," and I'm sure that order still stands. He put a lot of character substance into Super-8 (and to be fair, he had a lot of focus on characters in Trek), so there's no reason to believe that he won't have some depth to the story with the next one, too. However, he definitely will try to have an action-packed adventure as well.
