Call me late for dinner.
I read the comic book collection of his original story for "City on the Edge of Forever". It is indeed what everyone said it was, a fantastic story. I vaguely recall reading story details and maybe some excerpts before, but the whole package, with art and story flow is really impressive.
To be sure, this is NOT a story they could have done on TOS. Looking at the panels that fulfill Ellison's "vision" they could not have done it on a TV budget no matter what Ellison thinks (at least not for ($186,000). i'm not sure having a secondary character like Beckwith and also making a drug dealer is really inherently better than havinng a primary character like McCoy accidentally inject himself...in a way that makes having to find McCoy more tragic. Still, there is a great sense of urgency in the story and it would make a great 90 minute film.
