Wasn't the original Enterprise capable of picking up AM and FM frequencies in TOS, too?Well, they all will be equipped with FM radios and Jayla's iPod playlist. That's for sure.

Now they get to spend those next 54 days and more probably on Starbase Yorktown taking on Odd assignments waiting for the Enterprise-A to be finish building. (Which we are going to see in the Star Trek: Boldly Go comic that starts in October).
Yup, I was definitely hoping for the real "A", for sure. I know that originally the Kelvin was supposed to be a TOS Connie getting destroyed, but I can only imagine the fan uproar at the time if they had symbolically destroyed TOS to replace it with the new 'verse.
I personally don't see what is retro or old about the "A" at all - '79 or not, it is absolutely sleek and futuristic in my opinion. I don't see that it would be a "step back" visually at all.... redo the interiors, fine.... but the shell was just about perfect the way it was.
The deflector dish is definitely different. The nacelle shape is more or less similar yet different at the same time.. I do love the overall look of the entire ship. Can't wait to see it in the next movie!
I still cant believe they didn't at least do the movie I-VI nacelles. was totally expecting the A to look very similar to the old style movie Ent. when it was finally built I was 'uh? its the same as before?!' (then again that happened in 1986 so maybe that in itself is a homage

Yeah, but this isn't the same era - in the Original Timeline Kirk hasn't even taken command of the TOS Enterprise yet.
Those flat nacelles didn't come about for another decade in the Original Timeline, and we don't know if they will now.
The Vengeance had nacelles that were closer to the movie refit ones than the TOS cylindrical ones. Since Commodore Paris made the effort to point out that the most "technologically advanced" ship was currently under construction, you'd think they'd have inherited tech from Section 31 in the aftermath of STiD (e.g. "advanced warp capabilities").
I wonder if this Enterprise-A is still considered Constitution class.
It looks different enough that we might finally get that Enterprise class we've debated for so long.
Yeah I wonder if it's a refit of the same class or a new class entirely.

The A looks roughly the same size with different styling so I dont think it's a new class, just a major revision of the design, perhaps incorporating some of the technology from the Vengeance.
The changes would have to be more visible to be a new class like the Excelsior.
