Pot-smoking neighbors

Call and have them arrested. It's the right thing to do.
And what good would be accomplished by this, pray tell?

Perhaps prevent children from inhaling drugs? Perhaps prevent other adults from inhaling drugs who may not be drug users themselves. And it would be the responsible, adult thing to do.

Wait, so now you are interested in using taxpayer dollars to protect the health of children and adults? What a fascinating role reversal this must be for you from ... everything you've ever said.

How low do you have to set the bar on actual health risk before you start wanting to throw taxpayer money at it? 'Cause walking past a cloud of pot smoke in the open air is a pretty damn minimal health risk, surpassed only by shark attacks on land and impalement by unicorn. It certainly doesn't rank anywhere near the actual health risks to children and adults that you've repeatedly demonstrated you don't give a damn about providing funds to treat at taxpayer's expense.

So pardon me if I find your sudden outpouring of concern for the health of the kids suspect. No, what's really going on here is instead of applying critical thinking and weighing the actual risk of marijuana versus the cost of law enforcement efforts to stop it, you've blindly jumped on the bandwagon and supported government interfering in the personal choices of adults who choose to use a substance which is less harmful than completely legal tobacco and alcohol. So, we can also throw out the old "smaller government with less involvement in the lives of its citizens" meme that conservatives like you also pay lip service to when it's convenient.

But by all means, waste police resources on busting a couple stoners. Because that's a real threat to society.

Brilliant response, and well spotted Mr. Bored.
Your tellings off are fast becoming legend.

:D

To the OP: To echo many in this thread, just talk to them about it.

Well played, sir. Well played.

:techman:

Seriously though, for anyone saying to call the police and have them arrested, where do you live? I know I'm repeating myself but the police wouldn't even respond to a call like that here. Especially now.

Could they even get a warrant based on "Some guy rang us and said someone was smoking pot in their house"?

Seems unlikely.

I guess it depends on the jurisdiction.

Here in California, possession of less than an ounce of marijuana is basically a ticket (if they even bother). You don't get arrested for it. I think it's a fine, something like $200.

It would cost the police more to respond and file all the paperwork than the fine is worth.

Same here, you won't be arrested for your first offense, a warning for your second, no charges brought until the third, in most cases.

I think you'd probably get laughed at if you called the cops to grass someone up for personal use, or at least be fobbed off with an "of course sir, we'll get right on that!".

By placing disdain on their smoking at 10am, you are attempting to make them conform to your schedule. Should they snap to attention and salute when you pass them as well?

RoJoHen, it is you who is the new kid on the block here. The Johnny-come-lately. It is you that is rocking the boat that everyone else seems to have no problem with. And if you live in a state that allows medical use of marijuana, your neighbors are perfectly within their rights to medicate themselves in their home in the way they always have. I hate the smell of tobacco and live in an apartment myself. But I cannot make my neighbors stop smoking in their home. My dislikes do not trump their right to live how they please in their own home.

It's not just about dislikes. As the OP said, the pot smoke is making him sick. No neighbor has the right to do that to anyone, not even if it's a completely legal activity. Now, true, going to the fuzz would probably be an overreaction, but it's not like he has to just sit there and take it.

A "dislike" would be something like, I wish my neighbor would rake his damn leaves 'cuz they keep blowing over onto my lawn. This goes beyond that. "Their smoke is making me ill." Hen has the right to try and do something about it. Go and talk to the neighbors (out of all the kinds of drug users one might end up living next to, potheads would seem to be comparatively harmless), or to the apartment manager.

And don't just tell him to move, either. He may not be able to afford that.

I'd take pot smoking neighbors over cigarette smoking ones any damn day of the week. The latter is what I have to contend with--they apparently chain smoke on weekends without opening their windows since it's cool out now so MY apartment smells like cigarette smoke which literally has made me sick.
Look on the bright side - at least they're not into cigars.
 A good quality cigar doesn't stink like that King Edward or Swisher Sweets crap.

I think you should take some measures to ensure the liberty you're entitled to is not spilling into the existence of everyone else. To that end, we had an individual that flooded our floor with a particularly foul smell. My tactic was embarrassment as demonstrated in this posting I made and displayed on the wall.

Within two days the smell never returned. The individual defaced it, though. Also their right. Freedom to smoke and freedom of speech. Message delivered, no one was hurt or arrested. All in a day's work.

As George F. Will has recently pointed out, this country is in the process of slowly legalizing marijuana. It's being done without a great deal of controversy or fuss, state by state, supported by reasonable decision making on the part of the federal government as regards enforcement.

Certainly all conservatives will endorse the concept of states' rights in this matter.

Five or ten years from now there will still be some federal laws concerning pot on the books, but they'll have been forgotten.

It's irresponsible to suggest turning these people in. The number of non-violent offenders serving time under mandatory sentencing guidelines is the major strain on our prison system now and directly results in violent criminals being released early or not incarcerated at all. Since new prisons require new taxes to pay for them and since virtually all communities practice NIMBY politics in regard to new prisons, the responsible adult solution is to stop throwing more people in jail for trivial offenses.

Hey, if you want to ignore criminal activity and have no problem with how it affects children that's your business. Me? I'd have them busted every time and twice on Sunday.

Don't like the law? Work to change it or deal with the ramifications. It's the adult thing to do.

 Yeah, it's all about "THE CHILDREN!!!!111111!!!!" You come across like someone who enjoys getting into other peoples' business, but when it comes to you then come the screams of bloody murder.

Sometimes, it's damned near impossible to change a "dumb law" because fundamentalists (mostly religious zealots) throw up roadblocks. They seem to think only *they* are the ones who know what it right for everyone else.

Nice job of ignoring the content of his post. Great work. Really. :bolian:

I ignored it because it was a ridiculous rant and not based in fact. I have always supported protecting children and innocent people. His points were simply not worth responding to at the time.

Yes John, it is indeed all about the children. What a horrible opinion, huh? Again, sorry I can't defend people who willfully break our laws and negatively affect others. Just how I was raised I guess.

Wait? Back that up. How is someone toking in his apartment "harming the children"?

<runs for a bag of popcorn>
