Hey there folks!

Instead of always creating a new thread for each new episode we premiere, I thought maybe I'd create a thread that I can just always update.

So to start, we have a new episode to premiere today!

Episode 1.04 - "Kiss & Tell"

You can check out all the past episodes here...

Posthuman Episode Listings.

And just check out the site in general; www.whatisameme.com

I hope everyone enjoys! And please, feel free to review, discuss, and let me know what you think!

Cheers, and thanks! :)

We got a new "Shedding Light" mini episode up on the site...it's a precursor to the new episode "Recidivist," which should be premiering soon! "Recidivist" is a really great episode with great performances that I can't wait for people to see.

In the meantime, enjoy Shedding Light 0.04 - "The Disappearance of Dorothy Ascher."

And I'm willing to beg for some attention from the TrekBBS community for our web series. We put a lot of work into it, and I would love comments, positive or negative, from folks. Please? /beg ;)

Okay, I'll bite! :rommie:

I tried watching the first one of the guy running...and running...and then some crazy video effects...and then honestly, I got bored. I didn't know what I was watching or why.

2nd attempt - watched
“The Disappearance of Dorothy Ascher”

Did he really say "nano-droids"? :wtf:

If so, change that. You can't use droids without everyone thinking Star Wars and then immediately thinking, what pharmeceutical company in their right minds would name a product after Star Wars? Not exactly a good way to convey confidence in a product you're investing millions into developing. Or was it a sarcastic slang term? That would convey that the general public doesn't fear these "nano-droids" and finds them absurd and contemptible, but apparently they are supposed to be fearsome, so what gives?

The rest sounded like derivative dystopian blather. I turned that one off even more quickly than the boring one of the guy running.

The problem is, you're not dropping the audience right into the action in a way that grabs their interest and makes them want to see more. Here's an example from a film student that shows you what I mean - it was later made into the movie, 9, which wasn't that hot largely because the script was just derivative dystopian blather (see, even the pro's are guilty of that), but the short film does immediately grab you.

Who (or what) is that thing? Where is it? Why is it pounding on some piece of scrap metal? Where is this taking place? And the sound design adds a lot to the atmsopherics. Then they introduce the cat-skeleton-monster to keep things exciting.

It's context-less and almost nothing is explained, but just goes to show how the minimalist approach, combined with visual interest, can surmount the immediate problem of convincing someone on the internet, just a click away from a funny video of a cat playing a cello, to keep watching this video in particular.

Our newest episode is up...episode 5, "Recidivist."

http://www.whatisameme.com/?p=276

We're pretty proud of this episode, I'm really proud of the actors in this one. They gave some great performances. Let me know what you guys think! :)

And thanks for your thoughts, Temis! The one with Porter running isn't actually the first episode. I think I need to re-tool the web site in some way, but depending on who you talk to, there's two ways people recommend arranging these things...newest episode first descending to the premiere episode, or have them listed with first episode first, then descending to the most recent. No matter what way I put it, someone thinks it's wrong that way! But that episode is possibly boring because without seeing the others, you may not know what's happening or be invested in the character. Or perhaps it's just not our strongest episode, which is also true.

But thank you for your thoughts. I hope you manage to see the episodes in their proper order and perhaps feel differently. The "Shedding Light mini-episodes" you don't even need to watch per se'...they're expositional info for people who are interested. But I'll definitely take your thoughts into consideration while writing in the future. So thanks. :)

It doesn't look like anyone is caring, but I'm gonna' keep trying!

We have a new production diary up, and with that, a documentary on the making of our third episode. It, as well as the most recent fifth, have been submitted to film festivals.

I've also rearranged our web site, partly with Temis in mind, so that the first episode shows up on the home page and you can scroll through them in order...instead of the most recent coming up first. I also put those mini episodes in a menu all on their own. Hope this helps!

Anyway, check out the new diary and the documentary here;

Cheers! :)

I thought Recidivist was really good. The acting was fantastic all around and I loved the setting and the cinematography. I think the location really helped to sell the story.

Thanks for the comments, JA! They mean a lot to me! The location definitely helped this episode...it was such a great place to shoot. I'm mostly proud of the actors, though. They did great work.

Hopefully we'll have episode 6 up soon...edited with some notes in mind that were given by the great JacksonArcher, himself! ;)

The actors were really great. I find it difficult sometimes with short films because you only have an allotted time to get across certain ideas and emotions and I think your cast convincingly pulled off some difficult emotions.

I thought the new episode was great! In a weird selfish way, I feel like I'm witnessing the evolution of these episodes.

I remember reading the scripts for some of them, and then seeing the rough cuts, and it's just awesome to watch the show evolve from an idea to a script to a fully-fleshed out, filmed episode. I mean, I remember when you first pitched me the idea for the series all these years ago.

The articles for the show were also a really wonderful read, and I'm glad to see that the show is getting some much-desired exposure. I can't wait for more episodes!

Thanks, JA!

So last night, our fifth episode won the BMO SHORT Shorts competition in the Grand River Film Festival! YAY! :D

Up next is another rehearsal for episode 7 before shooting that one, and then editing it, as well as editing episodes 8 and 9...which are already in the can! And more festival submissions on the horizon. Hopefully we can drum up some momentum!

Cheers!

Thanks, JA!

You won't have to wait long...we're shooting our seventh episode today! I'll be starting that edit immediately and going right from that into editing episodes 8 and 9!

Then rehearsals for episode 10...our first season is approaching its conclusion!
