Post your Desktop - Winter 08-09

^I looked for the owner but couldn't find them; I wanted to close the hood for a few pictures. Oh well.

No, I'm not a furry. ;)

^That only came about because 1920x1200 wallpaper is fairly hard to find; at least wallpaper that I want is hard to find. Scaling up lower res widescreen pics causes a bit of blurriness, so most of the time I have quite a bit of blank space on the desktop. Just occured to me out of the blue one day to shift some of the icons over to fill the space. Not only does it help fill the empty space, it gives the desktop a pleasing symmetry while also keeping the wallpaper clear of obscuring icons. A true eureka moment!

It works. I have trouble finding 1600x900 wallpapers. Usually I go to InterfaceLift and select 720p HDTV resolution and it works okay.

There are some stunning landscapes on that site. :)

Is it just me though, or does anyone else find it slightly disturbing to have pictures of subject matter you're not really involved with as wallpaper? No matter how beautiful the landscape or fantastic the SF cityscape, it doesn't feel like my computer unless it's a picture of something I have a personal connection with. Not sure if that makes any sense. Got insomnia and been up all night so that's probably not very well expressed.

This week's wallpaper (as always you can click the thumbnail for the full version):

I love it because it's just a serene image for me.

^ They mean the taskbar. There are thousands and thousands of buttons on the taskbar.

 I count 34 on the desktop toolbar and 12 on the quick launch...and they are much more out of the way than being on the actual desktop.

I think most people just aren't used to double task bars and such. Quite honestly, I have to say Windows 7 does a much better job with them than previous versions of Windows. I've got my free upgrade to Windows 7 coming in the mail in 2 weeks, and I'm actually excited to get it.

If I want 7 I have to go buy it myself... and since I'd have to store all my crap while installing it on my laptop, I might just skip on it and just stick to Vista. Is it that much better where it would be worth it to buy it and go through the trouble of moving all my stuff onto an external hard drive (which I'll probably end up buying either way, as my hard drive is getting pretty full as it is) and then installing it over my existing OS?

BTW, new desktop.

In a word? Yes.

In more than one word? Windows 7 is vastly superior to Windows Vista in almost every way. It is also a major improvement over Windows XP SP2 (although SP3 gave it a run for it's money in some areas). I ran Windows 7 RC1 on a 3 year old Mac and it ran like a champ, faster than the Windows XP installation I had there (Boot Camp). Better utilization of resources, faster page file access, less intrusive UAC, snappier interface, much faster file copying, faster networking (WAY faster networking protocols), and much more. Windows 7 is a true upgrade from Windows XP.
