As promised, this is my tree this year. :D

^ Thanks!

(Shhhhh. Actually it was done by a professional. I spent the last fifteen years doing floral work. My specialty is Holiday decorations. :alienblush: I guess you could say, I cheated.)

I hope you paid yourself well. It looks great. :D

I feel like such a Scrooge for not having put up any Christmas decorations for like the last...three years or so. Could be because it's been a long time since I thought Christmas was all that. Sadly I'm one of those people who just sort of get reminded that how lonely I feel, even in the crowd of my family.

But hey at least I get to watch "Karl Bertil Jonssons Julafton".

I finally got the chance to take some pictures of my decorations and upload them. I can't compete with AstroSmurf's smurfy professional decorations, but I'm quite happy with what I've got. :)

This is an antique doorknob cozy I found among my grandmother's decorations.

This is my favorite picture. See my doggie watching me in the mirror? And if you look in the mirror on the left, you can see a reflection of a reflection of me taking the picture. :D

This is the swag hanging on my front door. I'm pretty proud of this. I found it last year on clearance for about $8, except it had no bow. In the same store, the swag WITH the bow was about $40. I figured I could make the bow with the help of some ribbon and Google. So that's just what I did. Yay me!

I couldn't resist posting both pictures of this. This is my little tree, first time this year. I got this to dedicate to my grandma's old ornaments. When I was growing up, she used to just put up a small table-top tree, so I thought it would be nice to reinstate her tradition.

The mantle in the front hall, with just a few Christmas touches.

My grandma's old sewing machine in the front hall with a few decorations both hers and mine.

I've had better trees. It's not nearly as crooked as the star on top makes it appear. It's one of those trees that had two top branches, and it's so tall that I can't reach to adjust the star without a chair and someone to spot me. ;) And I didn't realize until I took this picture how top-heavy the lights seem.

A few little things atop the bookshelves. Yes, those are McCaffrey and Trek books. ;)

Little lamp table in the library.

The other half of the bookshelves.

One of my Sunday school students gave me this a number of years ago. I think it's really pretty!

The ficus has lights year-round, but the ornaments hanging from the light fixture are seasonal. :)

New runner for the console table this year. In fact, I have SEVERAL new table runners this year - TJMaxx had a sale. ;)

Another new table runner, this one in the kitchen. The candles need to go elsewhere, but they are living there for now. And Sonnet managed to sneak into another picture. :D

Our place with Marmaduke, the Christmas reindeer dad helped me make this year for the front of the house. Looks like Marmaduke is leaping to the roof. :)

^^ It was actually rather mild around here last night, about -5C, so that's probably closer to icy slush.

how come his suit isn't red?

Because he's not sponsored by the Coca Cola Company!

BTW, I know it's an urban legend! ;)
I was considering different replies, but this is perhaps the most on point.

Santa having a red suit goes way back to around the 1820s or maybe a little earlier. Even so depictions of Santa around the world as Kris Kringle, Father Christmas, Saint Nicholas and a host of other names have had him wearing a variety of attire in different colours, primarily red, white, green, brown, blue and even black.

Our collective idea of what Santa looks like (in North America anyway) is founded on mostly two or three sources: Clement Moore's poem A Visit From St. Nicholas (more commonly known as T'was The Night Before Christmas), Thomas Nast's illustrations during the 19th century and finally Coca Cola's advertising starting in 1931 which cemented the image in North American consciousness. But prior to Coke's advertising Santa has been tall, short, jolly, stern and dressed in a variety of ways.

Candidly very few people have remarked on my Santa not having a red coat, particularly when they hear my laugh and see how I portray him. Most people comment on how my Santa seems more oldfashioned, more old school rather than commercial, and they found that a pleasant change.

Actually I hope to fashion another suit that I can alternate with this current one. The new one will be red, but not he bright candy cane red. I'm aiming for a bit darker red (close to what you see on my current hat and sash) on a rough looking materiel like what I presently have. My end goal is again to have something that looks more oldfashioned and definately distinct from the candy cane, shopping mall Santa. And in truth I'm not alone in this. Over the years I've seen many individuals personalize their Santa suits that distinguish them from more common store versions. These usually take the form of different shades of red, having a long coat and sometimes having a fur trimmed hood rather than a hat.

When I play Santa I steer clear of shilling or promoting for anything. My Santa is about fun, good humour and good cheer, good times and good will for all. It's my way of contributing to a Christmas that isn't wrapped up solely in a lot of cash having to be spent in a store.
