Post Ultimate Computer USS Excalibur

LordSarvain

Lieutenant Commander
Red Shirt
So I was working on the backstory for my Edward Teller model and decided that the USS Excalibur (NCC-1705) would be used as a testbed for some of the technology for the new ship. I decided it would be used during its repair/refit following the ships near destruction by the M-5 computer. SO... I was supposed to throw together a quick Constitution looking ship (because I didn't plan on doing an accurate model, just wanted to give the appearance of one) for some pics, then wreck it and then show it with various warp engines and other parts that will eventually pop up on the Edward Teller. And then I tweaked a little here and there, and then some more etc., and now I kinda like the ship as a stand alone. Now, it's not accurate to any set of plans, its just my idea of how the ship would be returned to duty once it finished being a test ship. Clearly this would have been some time before the big refit the Enterprise went through.

She's quite a sleek update. Some of the blue denotes a JJprise feel, but I won't hold that against you. LOL I like it. Do you have plans to texture it?

One small request: please use the TOS block-style lettering for the hull nomenclature. And keep the old "boomerang" Starfleet pennant. That would make a really nice touch.

It's amazing how much better and sleeker the 1701 looks with just a few little updates. This is a great design. It doesn't deviate much from the TOS style, but manages to modernize it enough to look much more futuristic.

Nice....Very clean looking! Nice little homage to TMP photorp launcher design and to TOS (where it spits out of that general area some times). My only real critique that's base purely on my own personal POV is that the nacelles don't need to have that slight bulge- but I do see how it adds a visual appeal. I really like the inboard grills, especially the forward covered part.

I hope you don't get too greebly, but can strike the balance with adding important details.

Well done.

Thanks for the comments everyone, hopefully I'll have an update for this in a day or so.

@Ensign Ro - Yep, working on textures now.

@Wingsley - request granted!

@Patrickivan - it's about as greebled as it's going to get.

@Ar-Pharazon - good eye, yeah the secondary hull is a bit bigger, that was to support an enlarged engineering section during the testing phase before being returned to service.

@Captain_Nelson - that's a nice model you have there too!

Something you might consider for a later version. You might want to have a single recessed forward facing tube. Above and to either side, two semi-recessed "megaphaser cannons" flank it.

I like the inside facing grill design, and I like how she has her torpedo tubes underneath her main hull, similar to the original Constitution. I feel that is what should have been done with the AU Enterprise.

An Excellent design!
I see you even used our NCC-1705 (Most people think our ships number is 1664) I see some influence of the recent movie Enterprise.

That is actually kinda funny, because I thought that the Excalibur was one of the vessels destroyed or damaged beyond repair by the M5. It would give sense to the alternate registry number; either they built a new Excalibur to replace the destroyed one, or they just simply renamed another vessel the Excalibur, similar to how the Yorktown was renamed Enterprise.

Our show takes the hulk of the Excalibur back to Earth and strips her to the Space Frame pretty much and rebuilds her in dry dock in earth orbit. We went with the NCC-1705 using the Franz Joseph Tech numbers, It makes more sense than 1664, I felt all the constitution class ship shoudl star with the '17' in their numbers :)
We added some of the Enterprise upgrades as TMP is 4.5 years after teh begining of our show :)

I agree, the Franz Joseph numbers make more sense. For me, Greg Jein's number system killed one of the things I liked about the list of ships in the Commodore's office. To my mind, it meant there were more ships, of differing types, than we had seen. Now this isn't a slam against Greg Jein, who's done some fantastic modeling work, and it isn't to say there aren't discrepancies with the Franz Joseph numbers in regards to the show. I just like them better lol.

Y'know, the Gerald R. Ford class carriers look almost identical to the Nimitz class to the untrained eye.

There could've just been a class prior to the Constitution that looked almost the same.

There's no evidence of this of course.

^ Very true, and that would be a good point in favor of Jein's numbers. It's how I explained to myself the number on the Constellation (1017). But for this model, I'll stick with the 1705.

Or it could be that earlier vessels of a similar enough design were refitted. Perhaps there was a class that used parts similar to that used on the Kelvin/Avery class, and perhaps those ships were refit into Constitution class vessels. Perhaps to recycle as many ships as possible due to the ongoing cold war with the Klingons.
