Post 10 Facts About Yourself

I'm really enjoying reading all your posts! Let me think of some more trivial garbage about myself...

1. My first university degree was a double major in sociology and cultural anthropology. I call it my Cute But Useless degree because, at a Bachelor level, you can't do much with a degree in these subjects. However I really enjoyed my studies and have no regrets earning this degree.

2. I was studying towards a Bachelor in Child and Youth Studies but have recently switched to Law. I loved working in the Early Years field but the pay is crap and, with the coalition government, there's a possibility that my job was going to disappear altogether. And, to be honest, it was reaching the point where I wanted to smack a lot of parents upside the head, which isn't exactly professional.

3. I grew up in a very strict Roman Catholic household. As a teenager I wasn't allowed to go out at night with friends, never mind on a date (not that I was ever asked, but anyway...). It's a good thing I'm a natural homebody or I could have seriously gone off the rails. I'm much more lax with my own kids.

4. Due to an upper jawbone deformality, for which I had surgery when I was 12, I had a bad lisp for most of my childhood. It disappeared on its own when I was about 17. I had no self-confidence as a younger teenager and the lisp did not help whatsoever.

5. I've been a comfort eater all my life and though I'm healthy and quite fit I could do with losing about 60 lbs.

6. As much as I love knitting, cross-stitching and the like, I'd give up all my needlecraft skills to be able to draw or paint.

7. My sock yarn stash is embarrassingly large, especially as it takes me ages to finish knitting a pair. I'm a complete sucker for homespun, hand-dyed yarn.

8. If I see an old hand-stitched tablecloth or runner at a jumble sale or charity shop I feel compelled to buy it. I can't stand the thought of all that effort someone put into a piece of work being thrown out.

9. I'm left-handed, and am always on the lookout for other left-handers.

10. My maiden name, which is incorporated in my username, has 6 letters and one syllable, and, thanks to a silent letter, is never pronounced or spelled correctly. The main reason I took my husband's name upon marriage is that it's common and easy to spell. However my maiden name comes in handy in terms of usernames as it's never already taken.

1. i'm a freak. i was amidextrous as a kid, but when i was asked whether i was left or right handed by a school teacher and i replied 'both' she told me i couldn't be, so i chose to be left handed.

2. despite this i only write left handed. i eat, play cricket, softball, hockey, tennis and other racquet sports right handed. i also use my right hand to hold mugs and glasses.

3. besides Trek BBS, i visit 4 other forums on a daily basis.

4. one of those is a Canadian based GI Joe fansite.

5. another is for a ten year old mod for Quake 2.

6. i own 14 classic Doctor Who serials on DVD. none are from the First, Fifth or Sixth Doctor eras.

7. most are from the Third's.

8. i only have three complete TV shows on DVD. none are Star Trek.

9. one of them is the complete Spider-Man and His Amazing Friends.

10. i struggled to come up with some of these.

8. I think I have some weird form of ADD. My interests are numerous and varied, but I seem to jump from one interest to another at random. What attracts my attention one week, may be boring the next, and suddenly be interesting again six months later. It's frustrating.

That sort of hyper-focus is an aspect of some manifestations of ADD. Dr Ned Hallowell has written several books on ADD with descriptions of the various types and how to help control it without medication (Hallowell himself has ADD but he has never found medication to work so he's living proof that it can be controlled).

9. I'm left-handed, and am always on the lookout for other left-handers.

Here! :)

Interesting, if you don't drive maybe that's why you don't date that much? Is this something you planned? I have never smoked or tried marijuana, though I have had alcohol.

RAMA

I got my driver's license in case I needed it, but I never liked driving; I'm the only kid who ever told his parents NOT to surprise him with a car. I live in New York City, so the public transportation is good enough to manage without driving.

Not driving is one factor in not dating much. I've also had problems with shyness and social anxiety, plus I'm rather asexual; I'd like someone to date and spend time with, but not go as far as actual sex.

1. I have one older sister.
2. I am left handed.
3. I shave my head twice a week (if I remember).
4. I enjoy sketching.
5. I love Star Trek, but hate Voyager.
6. I love Doctor Who.
7. I play some form of RPG at least once a week.
8. I’m dating a girl who is smarter than I am.
9. I grew up in Minneapolis and currently live about a block from my elementary school.
10. I'm currently in my 30s and I still read comics.

(deep breath...)

1. I hate talking about myself, even under the relative anonymity of the internet.
2. (generic bragging about something or other)
3. I've never had any fashion sense whatsoever.
4. I've never met my father, and couldn't care less.
5. I don't drink. It's not due to some high-minded ideal, but because I puke the instant I taste anything alcoholic - like sticking fingers down my throat. I'm sure you can imagine how much that sucks.
6. I'm terrible at math.
7. They tried to teach me German and French at school. They failed.
8. Despite the above, there are some things I am actually good at.
9. Did I mention that I hate talking about myself?
10. Enjoy this post while you can, there's a good chance I'll have second thoughts and delete it in the next few hours.

The "somewhat different" is a bit of an understatement. ;)

You consume music in precisely the opposite way to me; it's fascinating, really, to think of the different neuronal pathways, learned interactions, cognitive processes, emotional biases, and so on, that are involved in such a completely divergent understanding of the same stimulus.

The way you consume music may stem from your intellectual pragmatism coupled with your tendency to compartmentalize. If you see music as a thing of enjoyment/leisure, and feel that enjoyment/leisure is opposite to work/effort, then you may believe that enjoyment of music should not require the same focussed effort that you put into your work.

I don't think that's it because there are other forms of pure entertainment where I will apply intellectual effort to apprehend the finer points. I simply don't consider music to be one of those media. This feels simpler; more a learned cultural effect, reinforced by practice (or lack of) over time. Still, even that more rudimentary difference would be remarkably complex in terms of neuronal pathways.

11. I'm the only one among my friends who can cook, including my "fianceé". Meaning I've now acquired the nickname, "Chef Johnny" (Yes, its a step up from calling a 6'1" tall guy, "Little Johnny" :sigh:)

Just in case she reads this forum -> I'm kidding. I love your cooking.

Howdy, colleague! (Alright, not colleague yet. I'm still in training. But anyway.)

I suppose this is the wrong time to admit that I have a "thing" for paramedics in uniform... ;)

I don't know... "add" could also be a synonym for "meet". I met a few new friends this weekend at the convention I attended. I got home and promptly added them on Facebook so that we could stay in touch.

(One of these days, I'm going to go through my friend list and try to determine how many I've actually met. It used to be well over 90%, but I've since become FB friends with some people whom I didn't know, but with whom I have multiple mutual friends.)

I was being a little cynical. Of course facebook can be really useful, but it's also the main cause for a growing number of people who have problems with normal human interaction.

I think FB is great for keeping in touch with friends and family who are overseas. Beyond that, I don't use it too frequently, unless bored out of my mind on nightshift.

And about the uniform thing...don't worry, why do you think I got into the job?

Ha. That, and I love helping people and driving with flashing blue & red lights.

You really think so? I doubt it's even a minor contributor. Besides, what do you consider "normal human interaction"? Do you mean technologically unaided? If so, would you react comfortably to a person who has not embraced the technology of clothes -- I mean, if we're speaking technically here, it's no more natural for people to communicate with the majority of their bodies covered than it is to communicate via blurbs of written data, symbols, and facebook settings. I'm not particularly fond of most aspects of facebook myself, I mostly go for the Scrabble, but I can't think of any way that it actually hinders people's social skills on a societal level as you are implying.

facebook itself is not a hindrance, rather becoming addicted to it and valuing it more than just getting out and talking to someone is. I have friends enough who care so much about their facebook friend count and who feel they need to share everything they do each moment or they won't feel "connected". I bet I could post about the shape of my latest achievement on the pot and seven people'd "like it".;)

You find people enough nowadays who, when talking to you can't leave their iPhone alone for two minutes 'cause they need to check their newsfeeds or twitter latest trivialities.
In any case, I'm using facebook as well as twitter, but I try to stay away from it if I can.

Codswallop! I can be antisocial all on my own, I don't need facebook or my cell for that.
