I've also seen them and my impression was much the same as yours. (Of course, people who study Great Whites have also been known to go out at feeding time in open boats of length less than that of some of their study subjects, so I guess crazy is a job qualification, kinda.)I've seen the ads for that. Holes like this one, though, are not uncommon in that part of the world - they're found all over southeastern Mexico and the Yucatan, including parts of Guatemala (though I believe they're less common in the highlands where Guatemala City is located.) They're called cenotes, from the Yucatec Mayan word meaning "well," so called because such sinkholes at lower elevations usually fill with groundwater after they form.
