Portal Games

I'm a big fan of the Portal games. And even though they have been out for several years now, it seems that things from them are still well known and haven't died away the way memes tend to. How many of us still smile when we are told the cake is a lie?

And the mythology of the games has spawned a great deal of thought too. Was chell really adopted? Is she the daughter of Cave and Caroline? And what is her realtionship to Doug Rattmann?

So, what are your thoughts on these games?

I think it's made pretty clear in Portal 2 for those that spotted the big clue that Chell a child of at least one employee and was in the complex for the "bring your daughter to work day" when GlaDoS went nuts.

I think Ratman's story was told in comic form. IIRC he's just another test subject that escaped, went nuts and starting living in the walls of the testing centre (though not necessarily in that order.)

The comic shows he was a scientist at Aperture. He was working on the Portal gun at one point.

I think the biggest question is that if Chell was adopted, could ratman be her adoptive father?

After several hundred years? Dead or in one of the stasis chambers. Probably dead.
I like to think he escaped and spent the rest of his days leaving omnious and confusing messages for Combine advisors...

How do we know it was several hundred years? I'd expect that several centuries of neglect would leave the enrichment center looking a lot worse.

You don't really, but I'm pretty sure the devs have said it's been centuries, so I'll just take their word for it.

Im with you on that one...anyway I got hooked on Portal from Tiberius!! Its such a cool game.

They're great games with clever puzzles and humor that ranges from outlandish to horrifying-yet-still-funny to downright silly. The memes and constant spouting of things from them out of context continues to annoy me though, and I still don't understand how any enjoyment could be derived from "the cake is a lie" when divorced completely from the atmosphere and context it comes from, where it was an amusingly-worded version of a creepy warning.
