Portal 2

Lol, I booted up my PS3.. took out my Buzz! Quiz disc (when the hell did I play that last I thought), and proceeded to go through the forced update... which warned me about removing the OtherOS option... which means I haven't been on PS3 in over a year, since that was April 1 of 2010! And I really only booted up on PS3 because you need to do it in order to link your PC copy... which is the one I really want to play! I probably should've been more suspicious when I pressed the power button and got a thick layer of dust on my index finger for my troubles :)

While the 10GB monstrosity was downloading on PC I did play a little on PS3, and it seemed pretty good. I don't think I've gotten far enough to understand the potato stuff yet, but the opening scene was pretty funny.

"Look at you, soaring majestically through the air, like an eagle piloting a blimp"

Well worth the price tag.

The little hidden easter eggs are great this time around. Did anyone else discover the hidden turret choir?

Right now I'm trying to find all of Ratman's dens for that final transmission achievement.

"So, how are you holding up? Because I'm a potato."
"Oh, good. My slow clap processor made it into this thing. So we have that."
"Hey, you're good at murder. Could you murder this bird for me?"
"I guess 1.6 volts isn't enough for emotional outbursts. Now we know that."
:guffaw:

This game is absolutely fantastic. Took everything good from the first and made it better. And the co-op mode is tons of fun.

I could fill a page with some of my favourite lines. This has to be one of the most quotable games in video gaming history!

Every damn line by Cave Johnston is hysterically funny and pure comedy gold.

"If you get covered in the repulsion gel here's some advice the lab boys gave me <page turn> do NOT get covered in the repulsion gel. We haven't entierly nailed down what element it is yet but I'll tell you this: it's a lively one and it does NOT like the human skeleton."

"Just a heads-up; we're going to have a superconductor turned up full blast and pointed at you for the duration of this test. I'll be honest, we're throwing science at the wall here to see what sticks. No idea what it'll do. Probably nothing. Best case scenario you might get some super powers. Worst case some tumours, which we'll cut out."

Additionally, some (very) random lines that spring to mind: -

"It's not out of the question that you might have a very minor case of serious brain damage..."
"Ah! Bird! Bird! Bird! Bird! Bird! Bird! Bird! Bird! Bird!"
"I'm different..."
"Yeah, take the lemons!"
"Spaaaaace!"

Haven't messed around much with co-op. As I expected, opting for some random partner landed me with someone who'd already done some of the test chambers, insisted on skipping them then skipped to the later ones and spent the whole time charging ahead and impatiently telling me what to do. Probably better to find someone who's new to it so you can both work it out together...unfortunately I only have a handful of people on the friends list and most of them are from playing L4D...which I haven't touched in months.

I just beat the game.

That ending......was the most fucking epic and hilarious thing I have ever seen in a game.

This game, this just hit ever single note right for me. Super fun to play, with utterly hilarious writing throughout. I just love it. It improves over the the first Portal in every way possible, and the first was already pretty close to perfect.

I'm surprised there's no complaining about Valve charging for the completely unnecessary coop accessories or that the length of the game didn't justify the price. Because that seems to be what everyone's doing.

That's because most of the people on this board are of a higher intellect than the average moron on the internet that like to bitch about things solely for the sake of bitching about something (not that all of us are above that, just most). Those robot accessories are completely unnecessary, so I say let Valve charge for them all they want. It's not like they sold you the game and then said you had to pay extra for the last level or something. Also, yes the game is short, but the quality of the time you have must be taken into account as well. With that, it's a more than fair deal.

And neither one of those criticisms is at all valid. So they're charging for, as you said, unnecessary co-op stuff. Welcome to 21st century gaming! As for the length, the game it what you make it. I found it to be an incredibly enjoyable 9 hours or so to defeat the single player. It's not supposed to be a massive 70-hour campaign or something like that. It is exactly what it was supposed to be (and better, honestly, because I thought it would be much shorter).

Believe me, I am usually the last person to say "it's not for you." But people complaining about the length completely missed the point.

I suspect that a lot of the backlash is because the Portal Sack ARG didn't play into things nearly as much as everyone was expecting. Everyone, including myself, was convinced that it would release early, and then that it would release quickly when the GLaDOS@home site went up. But after a day or so, it should have been obvious that that wasn't happening.

NOTE: brian, I'm directing this generally at the complaints you pointed out, not at you. Unless you are also making those complaints, in which case it is directed at you. :p

Also: Some of these complainers should
have their computers turned into 1.1 volt potato batteries.

I was pretty sure from the get go that it would only be the day before at the earliest and I wasn't far off! The game length ship sailed a lonnnng time ago. How long are the Modern Warfare games again and how well did they sell? There are so many more things to consider to decide how much money a game is worth besides length. It isn't even everyone who's complaining about these things, as usual it's just a vocal minority.

Anyway, I beat the game tonight. I would have beaten it earlier, but did the first 3/4s of the co-op portion earlier today. It's amazing fun in co-op, so much so that when I went back to single player I felt a little lonely! We probably would have done the entire thing in one go if the friend I was playing with wasn't 2 hours ahead of me. Damn time zones. There are some really great accidental deaths that happen. And some not so accidental ones

Just making an observation that those complaints haven't come up here. I don't care about unnecessary coop accessories and I've only completed the single mode so far and I already consider it well worth the price.

^ Just checking. You're good in my book. :D

I have another response to the people complaining about length. Super Metroid, considered one of the best games ever made, was about 7-8 hours for the first runthrough if you had played Metroid or Metroid II. (10-11 hours if it was your first.) I bet that if you asked most of the complainers about it, they have either never played it or they love it. But the latter have completely forgotten that it cost about $70 on its first release.

Portal 2 co-op is a completely different game than single player, so I don't know what the complaint is. It's not like Dead Rising where it's the same game only there's a second identical character running around.

Also, I don't know why anyone would complain about the price. I got it off of BestBuy.com for $45 with a $10 gift card included and $10 in rewards zone points for preordering. That's a pretty decent price in my opinion. :)

Got it yesterday. It's the PS3 version as it would be too much of an effort for my PC. Quite pleasant. It's nice to feel clever; maybe not so nice when you realise that you've spent ten minutes failing to notice a doorway.

I'm on to the final boss battle (I think) but my friend is here and so's not to spoil it for him I saved and switched off. I can't understand any complaints about length or the co-op. It's a fantastic game, maybe even valve's best and that's saying something.

It's amazing to me that Valve managed to give GLaDOS legitimate character growth over the course of this game, I never would've guessed that going in.

The PS3 version also comes packed with the PC version. It also supports cross-platform multiplayer between PC and PS3.

Did anyone notice that a song by The National debuted within the game? Here it is:
