Porcupine Tree: New Album and Tour

Or maybe 'Stars Die' was the first poppier song they did.

On their debut album, the only song which hints at where they'd go later on is 'Radioactive Toy' pretty much. I listened to On The Sunday Of Life at work the other day. You have to be in the mood for it, but there's quite a few tracks I really enjoy on it. 'Nine Cats' has nonsensical, Syd Barrett-esque lyrics, but the tune is so lovely. 'It Will Rain For A Million Years' and 'Begonia Seduction Scene' are both quite nice.

My grey edition of the new DVD was shipped on Friday, so I'll really looking forward to that arriving in the mail.
 
Anesthetize arrived today!

I haven't had a chance to watch it yet, but it's here, in all its glory!!!

I'm still waiting for mine :(. I'm thinking it will arrive tomorrow in the post. Hope you enjoy it! From what I'm heard from guys on other PT forums, the packaging and presentation is beautiful!
 
MY GREY LIMITED EDITION ARRIVED TODAY! YES!

It's official: this could very well be the best concert DVD (not to mention the greatest packaging and presentation) I have ever seen. The photo book is just lovely. Incredibly high quality snaps that are nearly as good (though not quite) as being there in the front row in person. Some of the pics seem to be from the Incident tour, rather than the Tour of a Blank Planet (i remember Steve wearing that t shirt with the screaming baby with 'LULU' written underneath, on their recent Aussie tour), but they're so lush, it really doesn't bother me. It almost makes up for me not being alive in the vinyl gatefold artwork days, having this extraordinarily well-thought-out packaging. PT give you the whole package. Not just the amazing music (that itself is worth the asking price alone), but the superlative visuals, and the stunning artwork, too.

The concert itself is pretty much flawless. Exquisite performances of many of my favourite PT songs, including Dark Matter, Sever, .3, Normal, Drown With Me, the list goes on and on. The setlist was perfect (although there's so much fantastic material in their catalogue that they could have played just about anything from their discography and I'd be happy), with the only disappointment being the omission of Stars Die . Even some songs which I didnt count as faves beforehand (Sleep Together, for one) sound so brilliant on this DVD. Wilson sings with a much more aggressive tone on this track than he does in the studio, and it really suits it. The harmonies between Wilson and Wesley are of course amazing. I loved John Wesley's version of the My Ashes chorus. Beautiful. I got goosebumps. And Half Light. Oh, Half Light. I had to hold back tears at that one.

Amazing DVD, and even better than Arriving Somewhere (itself a near flawless live DVD). Unfortunately, I have not watched the Bluray version yet (just the DVD on my laptop). I'll have to bung it into my PS3 and check that baby out.

^ Sleep Together is truly supreme on this DVD.

They've made another concert available for download, proceeds to the funds to help out Japan's bassist Mick Karn who has cancer. It's from the FOABP so is similar content to Anesthetize (I assume - it's downloading now so I haven't seen the setlist yet) but has A SMART KID. That was worth the money alone, let alone the good cause.

Best band on the planet.

I downloaded that Mick Karn fundraiser gig. The setlist is kind of similar to Anesthetize, but A Smart Kid truly was worth the price of admission alone! And its a great set, for a good cause, so I couldn't resist.

The new DVD/Blu ray is doing very well in the charts, too, apparently. It got to number six in the UK! Number one in Finland! Amazon.com can't keep up with the demand! Go PT! :)

No.6 in the UK? So there are people out there then. Shame I've never met any, save the one person I converted.

Spock have you played the CDs yet? I'm interested in how good the sound is and how Prodigal sounds live.
 
The CD audios of the concert are SUPERB! Prodigal features one of the greatest Wilson solos of the gig. I just love this concert. Dark Matter, Sever, Sleep Together, BRILLIANT!

I'm surprised, but not unpleasantly, that the new DVD is doing pretty impressively on the charts, too. I didn't realise that there are so many of us, either. I've never met another PT fan in real life, except those I've converted, and the other ones at the gig I went to a few months ago.
 
Knew I shouldn't have asked - makes me more annoyed Prodigal and Nil Recurring aren't on the standard edition. And NR isn't on the Atlanta download either, despite being on the setlist! Fiends!
 
^Nil Recurring on the Blu Ray is just the live projection video, though, with the studio track in the background. No live performance of that, sadly, on the disc. Despite owning several FOABP live recordings, including Anesthetize and Atlanta, I haven't got a live version of Nil Recurring yet (but everything else from FOABP and NR).

I just got back from San Francisco, after seeing the first show of the new American Leg of the tour last night.

It was absolutely fantastic! It was even better than when we saw them last September. The set list has changed a fair amount...

I cannot believe they've brought back Pure Narcotic after all these years. Amazing.

Oh and Sleep Together for the first time on The Incident run too. And Even Less to open, pure 1999. Love it.
 
The rest of this leg they are playing with Coheed and Cambria, so that set list was special just for us.

Then there'll be the Radio City Music Hall show, which is supposed to be an epic, PT only night. I know a lot of people going to that show, but we can't make it.

We are leaving this morning to see Rush in Las Vegas though, so....

I wish I was going to the RCMH NYC, or Albert Hall gigs. That would require an international flight for me, though! :(

They should be truly spectacular concerts though. I wish they'd film at least one of the two for a DVD/CD release.

Which had better damn well include Pure Narcotic, Stars Die and Remember Me Lover :)

Just how special was this set then? Was Russia on Ice in full at last? Or even Anesthetize?

Sorry it took so long to reply. We just got back from seeing Rush in Las Vegas.

No, neither song was the full version. Anesthetize was The Pills I'm Taking section.

Even Less was the full extended Recordings version though.
