Poorly drawn covers

Have you noticed some of the covers are rather poorly drawn?

I just finished My Bothers Keeper - Enterprise and the likeness of Gary Mitchell is terrible.

It looks like the first two in the series were drawn off screencap references.

The Enterprise one... I don't remember seeing Gary Mitchell in that pose in the show, so maybe the artist had to make something up.

I like them though, they look good, even if the last one isn't totally on-model. Much better than just PhotoShop'd promo pics and a random starry background. YMMV, of course.

The weird thing about Republic's cover is how it was drawn off a reference photo where Gary's all silver-eyed and superior, giving him the most bizarre facial expression when he's "normal".

As much as I love the book itself--Betrayal's cover always irritates me. What the HELL was up with using Gul Macet as a stand-in for Marak? First, the fact that we KNOW who Macet is. Secondly, the uniform is completely wrong for the time period. And thirdly...even the expression and the look in his eyes is NOT at all suitable for Marak. Macet's much more even-keeled than that, and it shows. (Yes, Macet was outspoken. Yes, he fired on the Enterprise. But I still stand by that statement when you compare with Marak.)

I was just looking at one of the covers for Inrrection. This is the one with Data, Picard, and Riker on it. Picard just looks wrong. Why can't they get the little details right? His eyes & mouth are not right. Makes him look more like Picard's brother then Picard.

Details like, oh, I dunno... making sure the title you're talking about is spelled right before hitting "submit reply"?

I always thought the expression on Kirk's face on the cover of The Three Minute Universe made him look a bit like an imbecile.

Actually there are quite a few covers that I will never understand how they could have been approved!

While technically poorly Photoshopped and not drawn, the first three SCE covers were pretty damn bad:

Fortunately, they improved quickly.

^ We only had about nine-and-a-half seconds to put those first three S.C.E. covers together. It's amazing they looked that good.

Once we settled into doing a series, we brought Mike Collins in. And I think he did a magnificent job on the eBook covers, and his work only got better as time went on (I think his best work were the covers to Slings and Arrows and Remembrance of Things Past).

Didn't Mike Collins also draw one of the early New Frontier comics, and some Doctor Who for the British magazine? If that's who I'm thinking of, he's a really good artist.

Yeah, the ebooks do have some pretty awesome covers. I've liked the fact that most of SCE covers looked like actual scenes from the books, instead of just generic ship pictures, or just characters. Now don't get me wrong, there have been some really cool ship and character covers (especially some of the most recent covers, like Kobayashi Maru, and the Myriad Universe books), I just tend to like covers that are more than just those things (like the Destiny covers, which are absoultely amazing IMO).

There was only one "early" NF comic -- the one-shot "Double Time," published by WildStorm, and which Mike drew -- but yeah, it's the same guy. :)

I don't think he looks bad at all. Very similar to how he looked in Nemesis. (Maybe a bit thinner, though. :p)

I've not seen this one before... but LOL :guffaw: I'm sure it's not appropriate for family viewing :p

I agree with the other posters though, the newer paperback collections have awesome covers, I'm surprised by how much effort and detail has gone into them (No Surrender being a personal favourite) :bolian:.

I can't think of any other dodgy covers, though if I remember rightly, didn't Kira have some dubious likenesses on some of the early DS9 books?

A lot of the Richard Arnold era covers had niggly things wrong withthe way Kirk and/or Spock was drawn that made them look not good.

I have to admit that Shar on the DS9 relaunch novels bugged me at first. His hair took me by surprise- to the point I didn't notice his antennas and I couldn't figure out what that blue creature on the cover was and what it had to do with anything... LOL!! But, it all came together- and I'm very happy the powers that be did that nice group photo for the MG so that I could adjust. :)
