Pon Farr, and reproducing Vulcan Culture/ P.F. and Surviving Vulcans

Re: Vulcan survivors

Either way, so that their bloodline continues, I would be willing to mate with a few female Vulcans to do my part.

i'll second that, well male vulcans that is

I don't know...I love my dog, but I wouldn't mate with her. I know that they kinda look like earthlings, but who knows what's going on under those panties. I always thought all the interspecies mating on Trek was unimaginative.

Re: Pon Farr, and reproducing Vulcan Culture/ P.F. and Surviving Vulca

Roberto Orci said on Trekmovie that 10000 survivors does not include off-world colonies.

There are millions of 'em don't panic.

Spock must've forgot about them, bless him.

Re: Vulcan survivors

The 2000 years between the Vulcan/Romulan split is nowhere near enough time for any biological difference, in my opinion. Unless Romulus is very different from Vulcan. But of course, they're both Minchara-class planets, so it's really not.

Think about our own history. Have humans changed biologically since the year 9 AD? No, they haven't.

I'm not sure if 2000 years is the correct amount of time for Romulans leaving Vulcan (I'd have to rewatch Enterprise).

So yeah, the Vulcans won't have a problem with genetic diversity. I think it's more the loss of the planet and all its history than a problem repopulating the race. Romulus might be very antagonistic toward the Federation right now, but I can't believe any Romulans in this century will be super-happy about Vulcan, their ancestral home, being destroyed. If anything, I think Vulcan's destruction opens up the door for CLOSER Federation-Romulan relations. The Romulans will probably feel bad about what happened to Vulcan, and open up diplomatic relations and help with Vulcan's rebuilding.

^ Don't need to watch eps for this info. Others already have. Memory Alpha.

Re: Pon Farr, and reproducing Vulcan Culture/ P.F. and Surviving Vulca

Ridiculous. Okay, given that Star Trek and Vulcan is a work of fiction... Vulcan cannot be resurrected from the dead. There will be no Search for Spock, no resurrection of Spock at Mt. Seleya, No Intrepid, None of the other Vulcan 'shit' we all adore. ('shit' in quotations - meaning Vulcan stuff)

Look, it's crap that we have to talk about this film at all. It should not be canon. The new star trek film is not Star Trek with capital S and T.

Re: Pon Farr, and reproducing Vulcan Culture/ P.F. and Surviving Vulca

a note I thought I'd bring up is that the psychic shock of that many Vulcans snuffing it all at once would reverb across the Vulcan culture...and they would look at Romulans with very unfreindly eyes...

Re: Pon Farr, and reproducing Vulcan Culture/ P.F. and Surviving Vulca

I think they would only put the cause down to Nero, a mad man. Logic would indicate that.

Re: Vulcan survivors

I think the movie pretty well indicated that there were only about 10,000 survivors period. If there were other colonies, OldSpock would have just said, "Oh, well, the survivors of Vulcan are just going to relocate to one of the major colonies" or something like that.

What happened to P'Jem and all the other colonies? Well, remember in ENT how the Vulcans got caught in lies and snooping and all sorts of things. It could have been a condition of the formation of the Federation that Vulcans retreated from some colonies to please the Andorians, or as a show of good faith. Or, in this new reality, as soon as Nero shows up and exposes the whole Romulan thing early, the Vulcans decided to be even more insular. You know, come to think of it, the Vulcans are horrible at colonization! From P'Jem to Romulus, everywhere they go they just start trouble!

But how many people want to bet that out of 10,000 survivors, T'Pring is one of them?

Amok Time on the big screen. Four way love triangle. Spock loves Uhura, and has a nice relationship, then T'Pring shows up, Ponn Farr breaks out in a new, updated way, like as soon as two bonded individuals meet, they can't keep their hands off each other. Stonn, also a survivor, doesn't want a dirty halfblood to repopulate the race with his woman, and Kirk shoots T'Pring off to Delta Vega, which prompts Spock and him to fight!

*sigh* Ice cream plus bulletin board plus imminent bedtimes dont mix. I'll probably dream about this. Only my dream will probably have Spock fighting Bernie Mac for his daughter's hand in marriage...

You don't get how Paramount thinks, do you?

Why have Kirk and Spock fight over T'Pring when you can pack the male demographic into the theaters by having Uhura and T'Pring fight over Spock?

Jesus. This script writes itself.

Pon Farr as Mud wrestling. I'm predicting the return and survival of T'Pring as easily as I'm predicting Gaila's return as Kirk's yeoman for the next film.

Matter of fact, the climactic scene of the next film will be......(drumroll please).....the Uhura/T'Pring Pon Farr fight over Spock.

The only question is which A-Lister gets cast as T'Pring. My betting is on Lucy Liu, but that's just me.

Gaila's survival on one of the Hood's escape pods is a no-brainer. Pine's Kirk needs someone to keep his room clean. Ain't no Captain's Woman like an Orion Captain's Woman!

Re: Vulcan survivors

Pon farr cannot possibly mean they can ONLY mate every seven years. That'd really be dumb, and inconsistent with Romulans. At the very least, Romulans have never displayed a pon farr, so it can't be THAT important, can it? :P

I agree with this. Just because they have an OVERWHELMING URGE to mate every seven years doesn't mean they can't take the Vulcan Viagra and procreate whenever it is logical to do so. :vulcan:

They could go to Planet Bob and perform the refusion ceremony there. Mt. Seleya wasn't required for Spock's resurrection.

yes, it's not set the original timeline.

if the OT matters so much to you, you've got ten movies, six series, countless novels, and more to play with.

so go play! :)

Re: Vulcan survivors

Not only is the 2000 years not enough time for us short-lived earthlings to evolve into genetically different species, but Vulcans/Romulans would have had far fewer generations in 2000 years due to their longer lives.

That's like saying that none of the Star Trek "prime" universe ever happened because of the "Mirror Universe".

Who the heck are you...and where did you come from? I just said a similar thing in another thread....we agree on the mud wrestling but you forgot naked....you're slippin my brutha...slippin.

Of course I'm kidding around though....the only reason to bring back T'pring is to kick Uhura's little ass as his love interest...

How will Vulcan society rebuild?

I expect that they would do it "logically"...

Which I think would include:

All Vulcans still alive being required to submit genetic samples to a central registry. There their genes would be analyzed for any inherent flaws, and tables of compatability would be drawn up.

All adult Vulcans would be required to reproduce. Each family unit would be required to have 3 children at a minimum (replacement rate birthing is ~2.5 children/household, IIRC, and Vulcans would need to EXCEED that number). "Marriages" for breeding purposes would be arranged by the central database on the basis of genetic compatability after screening for inheritable disease/defect and for closeness of family realtion (to avoid any potential inbreeding issues).

Related to the previous point, any Vulcan NOT in a position to take a mate and raise a family would still be required to submit reproductive cells for IVF use.

The nature of the Vulcan "family" would also likely change, becoming more "commune" based. Child rearing would likely be done creche-style similar to the idea of the kibbutz.

Anyone have any thoughts?

Re: How will Vulcan society rebuild?

M'Sharak? There's already a thread on this; at least one, maybe more.

Re: How will Vulcan society rebuild?

I think the loss of Vulcan could undermine Spock/McCoy character interaction. Basically losing the humorous banter Nimoy/Kelley had. Now you'll inevitably get an unlikeable portrayal of the Doctor, because he's hurling abuse at a victimised Spock all the time. Wrong move in my opinion but we'll see... assuming the writers even plan to deal with the consequences of Vulcan. I would like to hope its destruction simply wasn't another bit of eye candy and there was something to develop further.
