Google won't need to take over for NASA, Google isn't waiting for NASA.
They're already putting up the Google Lunar X-Prize.
Google will give $20 million to whoever can get a rover onto the Moon, drive it around and take some video (with bonus bucks for other goals, like distance, pix of original Apollo hardware, etc). About a dozen teams worldwide have already registered.
Oh hell, just Google it for more info!
