^No, I don't support terrorists. They crossed a line in "For the Uniform" when they attacked the Defiant and Malinche.

Of course ! I'm a european liberal, we love terrorists and want them to take over the world.

What I find most shocking in that episode is how casually Sisko just blows up some Maquis ships as if they were Jem'Hadar.
There were human beings on those ships, fair enough they were criminals in the UFP's eyes, but he could have at least disabled their ships rather than slaughtering them all in the bat of an eyelid and show no remorse at all for doing so.

What has their race got to do with anything ? They aren't Federation citizens, they made that clear themselves. The Maquis were a terrorist organisation that committed multiple acts of war against the United Federation of Planets.

speak for yourself, pal.

i'm a liberal british european and i don't support terrorists. i may sympathise with their cause (Palistinian liberty for one) but deplore their methods (shooting rockets into civilian housing estates)

I think he was being sarcastic with stereotypes :)

Anyway, back to the subject, is there any difference between what the Maquis did to, say, American colonists in the 1770s? I don't ask that as pro-or-con Maquis, I just want to get a scale of the situation.

I mostly supported their goals. I just didn't support the way they went about achieving those goals.

No, actually, they didn't. The only time it's debatable is in "For the Uniform" but then, they were hunted, and attacked and possibly even killed by Starfleet for years, and they never shot at Starfleet vessels until that time. If there's been anyone committing acts of war, it's the Federation/Starfleet. Not the Macquis.

I mostly supported their goals. I just didn't support the way they went about achieving those goals.

But there was no other way to achieve those goals, just like there was no other way but a war for independence for the settlers of America against Britain in 1776. The British called the Americans terrorists as well, when they weren't, not even close. The Maquis weren't terrorists either. They never attacked any unarmed, non-combatant targets, and they most certainly didn't do it to incite terror.

They were not terrorists, they were guerrilla fighters.

Even Admiral Nechev said if she lived in the DMZ shed keep a phaser under her bed.

They got screwd by the treaty and had to make a choice, they chose not to abandon their homes, that meant they had to defend themselves as they were no longer federation citizens, therefore they were simply defending themselves and were hardly terrorists, they didn't set bombs off on federation soil they maybe crossed the line attacking starfleet ships but starfleet was attacking them.
The UFP turned their back on their own people to avoid a war with people that instead of appriciating the sacrifice the UFP made, joined the dominion and betrayed the entire quadrant!
The Maquis were right about the cardies!

While I don't like there methods(terrorism) I do support them in their hate for the Cardassians.

They were not terrorists.

Terrorism is using fear to blackmail your opponents into specific political decisions.
They hardly used fear as a weapon they were more like insurgent rebels

How would any of you feel if your government told you that your town now belonged to Al Qaida and you could either GTFO or let them murder you?

I think their cause was a good one.

Uniforms or no, the Cardassians fit the definition of terrorist better than the Maquis did.

Yes, I support the Maquis. They're fighting for a good cause.

No, the Maquis are not terrorists. They are freedom fighters.

The difference between freedom fighters and terrorists can be seen in the difference between the Polish Resistance Movement during WWII and Al-Qaeda.

The Polish Resistannce movement, more known as Armia Krajowa (Home Army). Were no terrorists. Their targets were always the German military and installations which were sed for Germanys advantage in the war, they didn't slaughter innocent civilians. There was a group in Poland which were using terrorist methods with attacks even on German civilians, the Polish Communist resistance movement but that movement was small and did never achieve any greater success in the war against the occupiers and it had no support among the Polish population either.

While the Polish resistance movement and most of the other resistance movements can be seen as freedom fighters, organizations like Al Qaeda can be seen as terrorists because they attack innocent civilians in order to create fear, not for military purpose. There is also another difference: While most of the resistance movements during WWII did fight for fredom and democracy, Al Qaeda fights to establish an islamic dictatorship. Note that Al Qaeda's targets are often innocent people in progressive democratic islamic states.

If we compare the Maquis with the organisations mentioned above, it's clear that the Maquis are freedom fighters, not terrorists. The Maquis fight an opressive dictatorship who have terrorized innocent civilians and also committed genocide on Bajor. The Maquis attack military targets, not innocent civilians and they also fight for a good cause. Therefore the Maquis are freedom fighters, not terrorists and should have support.

I must also point out the shameful treaty which was the reason for the Maquis to form and start the fight. The Federation sold out their own citizens in the same way England and France sold out Czechoslovakia to Hitler in 1938, one year before WWII started.

They were hunted like criminals, which is what they were - Eddington especially.

Crippling not one but two Starships is an act of war if I ever saw one.

The Maquis were fighting against the Cardassians and NOT the Federation, the only reason they eventually attacked the Federation was because they needed those industrial replicators and because the Feds wouldn't leave them alone.
The Maquis were Federation citizens living on colonies bordering Cardassian space, then one day the Federation hand those colonies over to the Cardassians. Would you be happy that your home had been handed over to an alien race? would you be happy living under constant attack from Cardassian terrorists? No you wouldn't. If you watch every episode again and actually listen to the dialogue it's made clear to you what the Cardassians were getting up to, beating people to death on the streets and arming their own colonists with weapons.
The Maquis wanted independence and were fighting for it, they left the Federation and the Federation didn't like it.

I support what the Maquis did and everyone else would do the exact same thing under those conditions.
All you people need to hear is the word 'terrorist' and automatically you assume the Maquis were the devil, they wern't even terrorists, they were merely defending themselves against the Cardassians and that false label given to the Maquis is the one thing I hated about DS9.

^And all of that was fine until they fired on a Federation starship. At that point they became a threat to Federation security.

They fired because they were being hunted and hounded by the Federation. The Maquis made it clear they wanted to be left alone but the Federation ignored that request, in effect the Federation were the aggressors.

Gosh - I guess at least one person had to take me seriously....

Eddington fired on the Defiant after it was disabled.
