Let's see how healthy the Trekkies on Trekbbs are. :)

By the way, how's everyone who exercises gearing up for the winter? Did you take a gym membership or are you determined to stay outdoors?

Despite being seen as in generally bad shape as I carry a bit of weight (I like food!), I tend to be training five times a day whether it's in the gym, at home, running... hiking and climbing when I get the chance as well as wrestling and an occasional boxing session.

But I also drink and smoke...
...not entirely fitting with the nerdy image a lot of Trek fans have. Though one of my trainers, and former British & Scottish Wrestling Champion, is the only friend I have who can spout out Trek phrases at random.

His latest paraphrasing being "What does God need with Youtube?"

I love exercise. I exercise nearly every day of the week. I do the gym (cardio and free weights) 2 or 3 times a week. If I gym twice a week, I run once out of doors, and if I gym three times a week I generally don't manage a run. This is in winter. In summer I usually manage to run at least once a week - it's easier with the light nights. I much prefer running to the gym, but they each have their benefits. I also bike in the summer. Usually once every couple of weeks. I play badminton, usually once a month or so, in place of the cardio in the gym. So, I play an hour's badminton and then hit the gym for the weights. It's just another way of doing cardio and getting in a bit of agility in. I bodyboard in the summer, too, and scuba dive as well. Summer or winter I hike once every couple of months, and summer or winter I walk to and from work every day, which is about 2 miles each way. I find it hard to fit it all in, actually. I've been unwell with a cold/flu for the last 3 or 4 days and so I haven't exercised for about 4 days. I've just been complaining to my husband how fat and unfit I feel. He's the same. He's away from home and not able to get to the gym. Boy, are we angsty!

One of the advantages of golf: You can do both while playing. Maybe that's why I love the game.:)

I exercise, but I don't have a strick workout regimen.

In the summer, I golf 3-4 days a week, play softball (thinking about retiring from that), hike, fish, boat (kayak) and swim. Living on the water, I get plenty of opportunities for water fun.

In the winter, I ski 3-4 days a week (just started last week), play volleyball, hike and ice fish. You don't get a lot of excercise ice fishing, but hauling the gear and setting things up can be a workout. We'll also often set up a game of "farmer's curling" when we ice fish: It's basically curling using squash and other veggies. And sometimes we'll set up a winter golf course on the ice and get in a few rounds when the fishing is slow.

I find weights relaxing and lift 3-4 times a week. I also hit the stationary bike almost every day at least 45 min. And it works! I feel MUCH better at 40 than I did at 30 and even 20.
Of course, cutting back extensively on my scotch consumption and only enjoying a couple of cigars a month helped, too. :)

I lift weights about 4-5 days a week. I don't do much cardio, but I really need to start. Now that I've found a good book, it'll be easier for me to hop on the stationary bike. I just get bored too easily doing cardio if I'm not doing something else.

Oddly despite growing up near a fantastic golf course, and doing a hiking/climbing combo near another... I never got around to trying that out, aside from the Crazy variety.

I'll have to make a note to do it sometime in 2009... and try not to be too Happy Gilmore about it.

I work out 5 -6 days a week.

We have a thing called cardio theater at our gym. Every single piece of cardio equipment has a 15" LCD monitor hooked up to it, with Comcast cable piped into it. So every person can watch/listen to what they want to.

Makes cardio a little less tedious. :)

A few of our machines have TVs hooked up to them, but the jacks for the headphones don't work, so you have to watch it with no sound and really crappy closed captioning.

I work out pretty much daily for about one to two hours each day (I never exceed three). I try to keep my exercises mixed so that one day I may go running and the next day I'll go skiing in the winter or swimming in the summer. I do different weight training exercises nightly during prime time hours. I also do calisthenics, boxing/wrestling, or paintball every so often (boxing/wrestling and paintball are over though since my brother has been redeployed to Iraq). I somewhat want one of the new treadmill workstation combos so that I can use it while working on the computer, but that may be overkill.

I was going "wow, our trekkies are incredibly fit!," but then I realised that this is the "Sports and Fitness" forum so it attracts fitness enthusiasts anyway. I should probably have posted this in Misc. :)

Different demographic. :)

Yeah, I think the percentage might be different based on forum.

^^For a question like this, it may not hurt to ask a mod to move it, see how the whole board looks.

For me, I am a crazy-ass runner. I was running fairly consistently up until a little over a year go when I hurt myself. Since then, I've had a hard time starting back up. However, I've got a race, I've got a training schedule, and I'm determined.

I'm training for the Big Horn 50km race in June, and I got a schedule set up that should get me there. I will be running 4 times a week- 30min once a week, 90 min oncea week, 1 hour once a week, and then a long weekend run ranging from 2 hours to 6 hours. I will also be cross training twice a week, which will probably be the stationary bike or aqua jogging. Through out the winter, I will also be trying to get some snow shoeing in, and I have a racquet ball class.

For the rest of the year, when I'm not running, I'm trying to bike, walk, hike, or paly ultimate frisbee. For winter, I will try to be outside as much as possible. I may need to upgrade a few of my winter clothes, but I can't stand working out inside (and running those majorly long lengths inside will probably do me a lot of damage). My hope is to go up to the trails as often as possible and do my long running up there.

50 pounds? You can lose it easy. Start to run again! You'll love it. And winter in California is great weather to run in.

In the sports and fitness forum, you've got a bit of preaching to the choir as it were.

Off to Misc to get a better idea of a larger population's fitness level.
