If it's true, that hardly any original characters appear as main stars in the novels, I also think that the Star Trek: Voyager relaunch can be stopped at all. Like someone put in here: We care more about the characters than about the ship itself.
I've been a (very) long time lurker on all these boards but I feel I should throw something into the pot here around the feeling that the Voyager relaunch should concentrate on the characters.
I agree, the show / relaunch are about the characters but it doesn't necessarily have to be about the characters we already know. Take the DS9-R for instance (NB. relaunch as a whole as I know some books do concentrate on specific characters):
Sisko - still an important character but not a big player in the DS9 relaunch (at present)
Kira - key character in the relaunch
Worf - back in TNG-R
Odo - not a big player in the DS9-R
Dax - in the current DS9-R timeline, a key character, but as we know from Destiny, will move on from DS9 at some point
O'Brien - not a big player in the DS9-R
Bashir - key character
Quark - key character
Jake Sisko - not entirely sure how to classify Jake ...
Following the main characters in the show, we were introduced to the relaunch characters, some from the show, some new and in my opinion, they are all rich in character and personality (although I qualify that with the DS9-R having had a better grounding than VOY-R, but expecting
Full Circle to be the starting point):
Vaughn, ch'Thane, Nog, Ro Laren, Tenmei, Taran'atar, etc.
I guess what I'm trying to say is that the true evolution and future of the VOY-R surely lies in not stagnating in the present. Beloved characters have moved in both the DS9-R and TNG-R and yet, almost all of those books have been successes. Why should Voyager be the exception to the rule?
