Poll: Bring Janeway back?

^ Well, OK - it was A Singular Destiny, it was well written (my first foray into KRAD), the story was interesting, but sheesh...all I get is Ezri Dax? Nothing against Ezri, and I'm glad to find out that she's doing well, but finding out about a couple of other people I had at least heard of before would have made me like it a lot more.

But I've read far worse books, including several with "Star Trek" on the cover.

As a point of comparison, was there anywhere near this lever of overreaction when Spock, Kirk or Data were killed? They are arguably far more important Trek characters yet people did not act like they were personally assualted when they were killed.

Janeway is not unique. She is just one of an entire universe of characters. If Star Trek can get on with Kirk and Data being dead, it will survive the loss of Janeway.

What makes the whining even less necessary is the fact that Janeway can still officially be "dead" and yet there is nothing from stoping a writer from telling stories set prior to that death. In the mainline books, Kirk is still dead. However, that does not stop anyone from doing a story with Kirk. They just set the story prior to his disappearance on the Enterprise B.

Janeway can be featured in ANY story a writer is interested in crafting as long as it is set prior to the events of Before Dishonor. All her death means is that she will not be a part of stories in the mainline after BD. I'm not sure why some people have a problem with that. Obsessive Janeway drones can simply read about her past exploits. This way they keep the Voyager crew together as they wreak havoc in the Delta Quadrant.

I never really cared for Janeway in the first place, and probly would be the first to cheer if she was killed off during the course of the series. That being said, I was actually disapointed in the way she was killed off. She should have had been dealt with better.
Bring her back, and kill her off a better way.

Why is the only acceptable Janeway a "live" one? Why does it matter if she is dead? All you want are stories with her in the lead role. That more is effenciently done in stories prior to their return from the DQ anyway.

Why is it so unaccptable that she is dead in the mainline "present?" Why can't you be content with future stories set in the past? Its the same fate that Kirk enjoys in the mainline. Why must Janeway be forced down the throat of fandom in all future stories when it is not necessary to do so?

Your own posts state that you just want Janeway stories. Fine you'd them sent in the past. But this is not about you enjoying stories. This REALLY about you trying to force everyone endure what you like ONLY because you like it.

They created the "Bring Back Kirk" movement for Kir- okay, not such a big deal.

Seriously, to get this worked up over the "death" of someone who never actually existed is just sad, sad, sad. Now I know what Shatner meant when he "told" the Trekkies in the SNL skit to "get a life".

The other side is why is it so important that you have a Dead Janeway. You are the one that is trying to force everyone to your point of view. You can read Picard, we can't read Janeway.

Why can't you be content with leaving a story on the shelf that had Janeway. Your way leaves nothing for Janeway fans, no one has ever asked you to give up your Next Gen Books, you however are leaving Janeway fans nothing.

We want Janeway alive, married, and having a family all of which is impossible your way.

Live Janeway takes nothing from you, Dead Janeway takes everything from Janeway fans.

Yes I'm worked up, Janeway is a role model, she one of my favorite Trek Characters, and yes I'm pissed. I have a life thank you very much, but It would be a lot better with a live Janeway.

Why don't you get a life, one that includes compassion for someone's feeling, especially since it doesn't take anything from you.

FYI, accusing someone of trolling is itself trolling and technically a warnable offense. Please don't do that again.

Brit - what you fail to understand is that we didn't force anyone to do anything, we're not forcing our opinions on you, and we're not depriving you of any kind of "right". It is not your right to be able to read anything, and you as a fan can't say that.

The people writing the stories get to write whatever they want, as long as everyone professionally involved is happy with it. That's the way this works, that's the way all books work. The ONLY people that have ANY kind of "right" to a story are the people with the intellectual property ownership. Period.

You, on the other hand, have a right not to buy anything you don't want to buy. But you are owed nothing by anyone. They produced 7 seasons and some other books, and you paid for all of that; there, the relationship ends. Doesn't matter how much of a role model she is to you, doesn't matter how much you feel you've invested as a fan - what you've paid for, you've already gotten. You don't control the future of the franchise any more than anyone else. Well, anyone else that doesn't, you know, actually control the future of the franchise.

I'm enjoying the current novel line...and that's it. I love Janeway, but think her death is a fascinating development...and that's it. I'm not denying or decrying or anything else; I just like the story.

You don't like the story. So don't buy it. Inform the powers that be that there's a market for what you want, and maybe they'll write it. Maybe they won't. That's up to them. That's the way this works. Anything else is crap.

(That is, not forced in the sense that we are forced to buy their dead-Janeway books - just as you are not forced to buy the not-dead-Janeway books that Brit and I would like. So, not forced at all really.)

Given their druthers, I'd bet most people would change something about TrekLit if they could, and wouldn't much care about other people being, ah, forced to endure it.

Hell, if I had my way, and could force you lot to endure it, I'd have sent every last Borg Cube to Federation Crushing Station #AtBloodyLast! years ago. And no, I wouldn't be sorry!

For the record, Archer was actually the first pick, but he had the hidden immunity idol.

Oh yes you can! She's gonna be in the first half of a thick VOY novel called "Full Circle". Just stop reading before she goes onto that Borg Ship, then wait a few more volumes for her inevitable return, or for the wacky "Janeway in Q-Space" stories that will likely pop up in time for the next big VOY anniversary! Or TV 7YM VOY flashback novels.

A good character is never going to vanish forever.

They wanted a strong storyline, that would polarize readers, not have everyone merely satisfied with a so-so storyline, cause a little controversy, pique some interest in the novel series that had faded from view somewhat over recent years. And that's what we got, with more to come. The Janeway saga is not yet over.

I'd bet most people would change something about TrekLit if they could, and wouldn't much care about other people being, ah, forced to endure it.

I want solid, brave storytelling. And I'm getting it in spades. More than I can read, for many years now, despite the MMPB publishing schedule being slashed a few years ago.
