I have a somewhat cheap 5.1 home theater and a 37" 720P tv, so I can't fully utilize Blu Ray tech, but I think I can still discern the difference between a BR and a DVD both in audio and video terms. Lost, for instance, looks spectacular on BR...though I should try watching the same episode on DVD to make a fair comparison I suppose.
Either way, as butlerd said, while the tech bump may not be as great I can't see myself buying a DVD if there's a BR available, unless reviews establish that the quality differences for a particular movie really are negligible. And it has happened occasionally. As a special features peruser I'll also buy the BR by default if more features are offered.
