Pocket's '08 -'09 schedule - LOTS of new covers!

Star Trek: The Original Series - MERE ANARCHY
by various authors

I'm thinking that this is a must-buy as well.
from someone who has read all the stories: yes. :D

Star Trek: The Original Series - CRUCIBLE
by David R. George III

I have the originals, so I'll pass. (Yes, Therin, I know about the original content.;))
I just realised that this one is coming out around the time of the new movie, so I'm guessing like the omnibus editions of the DS9R, this is aimed at new readers.

Is the shattered city on the cover of "A Singular Destiny" the shattered future-city from ENT's "Shockwave" two-parter? It's been years since I saw the episodes, but something about that shot looks familiar...

It looks like it to me.

(No, I know nothing about that book, or any other than Seven Deadly Sins - it just my geek memory putting that shot together with Shockwave...)

Yep. And if they don't add anything new to the hardcover, then regular readers would have very limited interest, and would be complaining that there was nothing for them to buy.

I only rebuy an omnibus collection if there's something new. I was ready to pass on "DS9: These Haunted Seas" recently, but decided it was the only way I'd ever get a ST book with Thriss on the cover. But I'd really been hanging out for a new introduction or afterword.

I wrote up a pretty extensive reaction to the schedule at my new blog. It would be far too long to reproduce here... :D

Hm

"It’s nice to see David McIntee again, as well"

Aw, ta!

" - his more humourous entry in The Sky’s The Limit should bode well for a Ferengi story."

Ah... I'm not that well known for doing Light & Fluffy actually! But you never know- I'm having fun with it, and I think it'll have its moments.

(I'm sure this has something to do with Mission: Impractical being one of the two DW books of mine that Marco has read...)

Hey, I just relaized something. It's a Vanguard title that isn't related to the weather. I wonder if the next few will use the same kind of theme like the first three, or if they'll be completely unrelated now.

since when's a Harbinger been weather-related?
D'oh! I compltely forgot that was the first one's title, I could have sworn it was weather related too.:brickwall::brickwall:

Must buy list:

STAR TREK: ENTERPRISE * KOBAYASHI MARU
STAR TREK CORPS OF ENGINEERS: WOUNDS (DS9-R tie-in w/Bashir)
STAR TREK DESTINY: GODS OF NIGHT
STAR TREK DESTINY: MERE MORTALS
STAR TREK DESTINY: LOST SOULS
STAR TREK: A SINGULAR DESTINY
STAR TREK TITAN: OVER A TORRENT SEA
STAR TREK: VOYAGER * FULL CIRCLE (I'll give Beyer a shot, despite my dislike of VOY-R prior to this point)
STAR TREK: THE NEXT GENERATION - LOSING THE PEACE
DEEP SPACE NINE: THE SOUL KEY
DEEP SPACE NINE: THE NEVER ENDING SACRIFICE
ENTERPRISE: THE ROMULAN WAR
TITAN (Title TBA) by James Swallow (Loved his first Trek book)

So yeah, it's gonna be a good 18+ months or so. And a busy one. When the hell am I supposed to find time to read non-Trek at this point? :scream:

Considering the two new published works per month rule, will the issuance of a TREK movie novelization in Apr/May 2009 going to impact any of the books scheduled for that period and cause a resulting domino effect of books changing publish dates?

No, 'cos ST hardcovers have usually been additional to the MMPB of that month. So, if they keep with the small hardcover size of the last four novelizations... Margaret said that novelizations are a last-minute thing.

So the New Frontier will be a larger paperback like the Mirror Universe books, rather than a hard back?

Still fits on the same shelf. Well, at least in my shelving arrangement. ;)

no thats fine, but i prefer the hardcover, its a treat considering how infrequent we get New Frontier.

Then again I am so happy to getting more New Frontier it could be written on a Burger King napkin and I would get it.

So the word count should be longer in this format rather than the smaller novels?. Or will they just opt for GIANT print??

The original question was whether or not Ezri would be commanding a Luna-class vessel. If she is commanding a ship called the Aventine, and that is not a moon in the Sol system, then it's probably a safe bet her ship is not of that class.
I don't have my notes from various panels handy, but I believe Dave Mack said Ezri's ship was Vespa-class. Or Vesta-class, because I can't see Ezri commanding a moped. :)

Well, trades are of similar internal dimensions to the hardcovers, and PAD's NF hardcovers have usually produced fairly thick MMPB reprints... I'd be expecting something similar to his last three NF hardcovers.

The trades with tinier print have been the ones cramming several novels into one volume, such as the Signature Editions.

Is it a sign that I've been here too long that I knew in advance that you would comment on this part of my post? :guffaw:

Yeah, let negativity reign free, I say!

 In this case you are the one having the negative attitude, since my comment you quoted was in no way meant negative, I just thought it was funny how predictable both of us are in some things. It was a joking comment.

Only two Voyager novels? :( Oh well, I'm really looking forward to Destiny. I'll probably check out a lot of the others as well. Good lineup I say.

Some random comments from reading several pages at once (sorry, Shore Leave was very busy for me this year):

Yes, the U.S.S. Aventine, commanded by Ezri Dax, is a Vesta-class ship. The Aventine is one of the seven hills on which ancient Rome was built. The other ships in the class would include U.S.S. Caelian, U.S.S. Capitoline, U.S.S. Esquiline, U.S.S. Palatine, U.S.S. Quirinal, and U.S.S. Viminal.

There is no deep, dark reason why the cover to Destiny Book 3 hasn't been revealed: it's simply that the artist hasn't finished it yet. Each cover is by a different artist, Cliff Nielsen for Book 1, Stephane Martiniere for Book 2, and Rick Berry for Book 3, and Rick's wasn't done in time for Shore Leave. Marco and Margaret assured folks at Shore Leave that it will be posted online as soon as it's done and approved.

The reasons for the release of a Crucible hardcover in May 2009 should be fairly obvious to anyone who recalls what else Star Trek-related is happening in May 2009. :)

The Aventine will also feature in A Singular Destiny.

The novelization of the forthcoming movie will not have an effect on the schedule here, no.

The city on the cover of ASD is not the one from "Shockwave," though I wouldn't be surprised if Alan Dingman used it for reference.

Oh, and there will be new material in Out of the Cocoon, and in general the plan is to do two trade paperbacks per year that reprint eBooks. For 2009, it's Mere Anarchy and Out of the Cocoon. Over the course of 2010-2011 we'll likely get out What's Past, Turn the Page, Remembrance of Things Past, and Slings and Arrows, though that's not set in stone or anything.

Just in general: Shore Leave was a big success, with all the panels about Trek books getting good-sized audiences. I also got a good crowd for my one-hour solo shot (I read the first chapter of A Gutted World, then took questions for half an hour). There was a lot of excitement about what's been published and what's coming, which was very edifying.

And of course USS Vesta. ;)

Also: This isn't supposed to be a very large ship, is it? (I'm guessing that Ezri's actual *rank* isn't yet Captain, only her position. )

Why are you assuming that? There's no evidence to support the notion that there has to be a ship of the same name as the class. In fact, there's absolutely no on-screen evidence to support the notion that that's a universal practice, and one big piece of evidence that they don't always: the U.S.S. Enterprise-D, which was the first of the Galaxy-class ships, with the second being the Yamato.

You would be guessing incorrectly.
