I gave $250 to Oxfam and $200 to the Red Cross. I plan to donate more (when donating to disaster relief, I usually try spread it out), but I'm still deciding which other organizations to donate to.

I would like to make a suggestion -

Maybe we could set a target for people on Trekbbs to pledge(maybe $US2000). It doesn't matter which organisation you give to just tell us how much you have given. Someone could do a running total each day. I am certain that we could reach $2000 easily.

I LOVE your suggestion. Would that get the BBS into some type of legal mumbo jumbo trouble??

I'd rather keep how much I donated a secret. It isn't that much. But it made me feel better.

I don't see that it would as we are only pledging money - the board has nothing to do with the collection at all.

Non-Americans could convert the amount of their donations to US dollars at this site

web page

My $AUS60 = $US46.42

Edited to add: If people do not want to publicly announce how much they have given maybe one person can be nominated to tally up such donations on the provision the keep the names on people who contact them a secret.

This is a great idea.

I volunteer to keep a tally. Simply PM me with your pledge amount and I will post running totals. I will omit your name if you put (Anonymous) in the PM title.

I donated 50 bucks through Amazon.com

Excellent! :)

All right -- here's a revised plan. I'm going to add up the publicly posted figures in a running tally along with the private PM figures. (I will check only this thread, and not any other thread, for publicly posted donation acknowledgments.) The "anonymous" request (see above) in PM's will be honored. Further, if I see duplication of names (i.e., a message here acknowledging a donation bears the same name as a PM), then I will count only one or the other. However, if you donate more than once, feel free to PM me each time you donate and tell me that it is an additional donation. (If you publicly post a contribution and then send me a PM marked "Anonymous", then I will assume that you have contributed twice and will list the second contribution under "Anonymous".)

So to recap: I volunteer to run a tally and will post messages in this thread accordingly and I will add both the figures publicly posted in this thread with those PM'd to me.

Tally as of last edit (numbers rounded where converted):

$34.00 -- Rincewiend
$150.00 -- RJDiogenes
$46.00 -- Miss Chicken
$450.00 -- Pegaritaville <-- Most impressive!
$50.00 -- SatanClaus
$120.00 -- CaptJack
$10.00 -- iTako
$95.00 -- Striparella and sister
$100.00 -- Sheep
$75.00 -- Dorian Thompson

My sister and I donated to Médecins Sans Frontières (although i don't know why they have to say Doctors Without Boarders - i didn't do French and i know what it means!!)

But i'm quite good at giving to other charities throughout the year as well such as Oxfam so i know that money is being used to help as well.

I just sent in $120.00 U.S. to Oxfam by check. Hope it helps.

It sure does! And thanks to SatanClaus and Striparella, as well.

A continuing thanks to everyone else who contributes, just in case I fail to respond to your message. I will continue to update the running tally by the following method:

1. I will edit the most recent editable post of mine containing a tally.

2. Once a tally post becomes uneditable because of the passage of time, I will start a new tally post carrying over the last tally.

So if a tally post seems outdated, it may be because it has been superseded by a more recent tally post. :)

I'm just wondering, but how reliable is the World Vision site?

World Vision has been around for decades and I trust it implicitly. I've seen it listed in at least one other source as a reputable charity.

Following is a link to their annual reports online:

If you want to check out a list of charities contributing to the relief effort, you can find one at http://www.usaid.gov.

No, that's quite alright. I'm donating $10 (I honestly wish I could donate more, perhaps I will later), but I had never heard of the organization. I was just a bit skeptical, but not anymore. ;)

Anyways, I'm $10 poorer. Hope the region is $10 better.

Whoops forgot to say how much we donated!

Twas £25 each - and by Yahoo! and their currency convertor they make that $95.92 so we'll just say $95 even though i know it's closer to $96 but $95 just sounds better!!

It might not sound a lot but coming off of Christmas money is always tight!!

$100 via Amazon's 1-click link here. There's a good chance it'll increase with time and once I get all my Christmas expenses paid off.
