Playstation 3 games

I just purchased a Playstation3. Thanks to Bigfoot for PMing me a list of suggested games to try out. I'll be checking those out over the next few weeks.

I'm just wonderring who here has one of these cool machines, what you think of it, and what games should I check out/avoid at all costs. Also, what other cool things can it do (other than the blueray player).

Also, just for curiosity, which machine do you have? Mine is a 40G, but I also noticed that they've been out in 20G, 60G, 80G, and 160G. Also, some are backwards compatible, some are not, and some have card readers for photos....

The only games I've played on mine are Star Wars: Force Unleashed (which was really mediocre), Lego Batman (which was a lot of fun), and LittleBigPlanet (which was really fun for a while, but it got old as soon as I beat it).

I mostly just use it as a DVD player now. If anyone knows of any good new games, I am interested.

I mostly use mine as a Blu-Ray player, which works quite well. The only game I've really enjoyed on it is MSG4 although my little brother loves Call of Duty 4.

As for the console itself, the 60gb release console is by far the best one released... emotion engine chip for hardware PS2 compatibility, internal wifi, memory card reader...

It really depends on what type of games you want to play. Playstation doesn't have the platform-specific name brand of games like Nintendo, but the cross-platform titles are just fine on both the PS3 and 360 (despite what a certain unconditional Xbox worshipper on here would tell you).

Some of the higher rated games you can play on the PS3 include Killzone 2, Resistance 2, Dead Space, Little Big Planet, Bioshock, Street Fighter IV, Fallout 3, Eternal Sonta, Valkyria Chronicles, Call of Duty 4, Assassin's Creed, Burnout Paradise, Ninja Gaiden Sigma, Rock Band 2, Grand Theft Auto IV and Metal Gear Solid 4, for starters.

I have the 40GB model. I use it as a DVD player, also to stream media from my PC to the television. As soon as LOTR is released on Blu-Ray I'll use it for that too. As for games I own and adore Metal Gear Solid 4, Flower and Wipeout HD. The titles I'm most looking forward to are Heavy Rain and Fat Princess.

My 40 GB PS3, which I bought last year, recently stopped working. The warranty expired last month, and I refused to pay Sony $150+ to fix a faulty item. If you ask me, the repair should be free and the warranty longer. I would advise the OP to get extended warranty on this item if he hasn't done that already.

As for game selections for this console, I personally like Action/Adventure games. I don't really care for first-person shooters like Call of Duty 4, and I'm more inclined to play fighting/arcade-style games, specifically, Streetfighter IV and Naruto Ultimate Ninja Storm (with a good playable story to go along with it).

Valkyria Chronicles might just be the greatest game of the past five years. Miss it at your own peril. And don't come crying to me when you decide you want it in a year's time and have to pay $500 for it on eBay.

Anyhoo, I have a 60GB model. Truthfully, my PS3 mainly serves as a PS2 upscaler - and I'm fine with that. I still love the handful of games I have, though :)

Valkyria Chronicles is on sale for $30 at EB Games/Gamestop for their current "Game Days" sale, which I don't know when it ends. Of course, even though they say it's "new," they open every single one of the games that are part of the sale.

If anyone knows of any good new games, I am interested.
Here's the list of games I PMed to Captain Ice:
- Burnout Paradise - very fun (arcade) driving game
- The Elder Scrolls IV - Oblivion - awesome RPG
- Fallout 3 - another great RPG
- Grand Theft Auto IV - I don't think I need to explain this one
- Little Big Planet - a great and pretty unique platformer where you can also create your own levels and share them online
- Metal Gear Solid 4 - a must buy if you're a fan of the series... and even if you're not.
- Motorstorm: Pacific Rift - another fun (arcade) driving game
- NHL '09 (the EA one) - best hockey game ever
- Prince of Persia - great platformer with a bit of hack & slash. Awesome story, great graphics, it is a bit on the easy side though and might not appeal to every one.
- Ratchet & Clank: Tools of Destruction - awesome platformer with almost Pixar-like graphics... one of my favourite PS3 games.
- Uncharted: Drake's Fortune - another seriously great game; you can also get it for a really nice price. The sequel should be coming out towards the end of the year.
- Valkyria Chronicles - a strategy game with a bit of RPG thrown in the mix. One of my favourite games ever and definitely my 2008 GOTY.

You can also download a bunch really solid games directly from the Playstation Network (if your PS3 is hooked up to the internet), most of them cost around $10-$15:
- 3 on 3 NHL Arcade - hockey arcade style with powerups and no rules. A lot of fun if you play it online.
- Burnout Paradise - same one as mentioned before, you can also DL it from the PSN
- Ratchet & Clank: Quest for Booty - a semi-sequel to Tools of Destruction. Only get it if you've played ToD and loved it.
- Wipeout HD - awesome futuristic racing game and it's cheap too.

Btw, I put my favourite games that I also play the most in bold.

I have to second the recommendations for Burnout Paradise, NHL 09 and Fallout 3.
I also have to give a shoutout for Super Stardust HD, its a downloadable game off of PSN and its great fun. Aside from the Bluray player you can hook the PS3 up to your network and play your music and movie collection from your computer's hard drive. It's very handy if you have an HDTV and/or a decent sound system (Downloading the 1080p versions of the Star Trek trailers and watching them on a big screen TV is amazing.)

I only have NHL 09, Ratchet and Clank and Rockband, and they are the only games I have played on the PS3.

NHL is awesome, but takes a quite a while to get used to the controls. Ratchet and Clank is pretty good, but each game in the franchise gets less fun. I agree it looks amazing, though!

My opinion on the NHL controls: first of all, I got used to them very quickly and now I absolutely love them. I'd never wanna go back to the old controls. And for people who can't get used to the new controls (or just don't wanna bother), they can always use the classic control setup.

And well, I absolutely adore Tools of Destruction. I've played through the game four times already (and twice through Quest for Booty) and I plan to play through both of them at least one more time before the next R&C (titled A Crack in Time) is released. ;)

I'm getting a pretty hefty tax refund (I procrastinated on filing this year :p) and I'm considering finally picking up a PS3, but I'm not sure which model to go with. Any suggestions?

For games, I'm planning on getting Metal Gear Solid 4 and Uncharted: Drake's Fortune first. I'm a big MGS fan, and Uncharted looks like a lot of fun (plus I love "modern day Indiana Jones" type stuff).

Unless you're planning on getting a used model, I don't think you have much choice in terms of backwards compatibility etc. Your only choice would be on size of hard drive.

I don't bother with consoles, any games I want come out or eventually come out for the PC and they're much faster and easier to control on my PC. I hate for example playing shooting games on consoles where you have to aim with the toggle, IT NEVER AIMS RIGHT!

Yeah, not really sure which size HD I should get, though. I don't do a lot of online multiplayer, so I don't see myself downloading a lot of map packs or anything like that. Is 40GB the smallest HD?

You might be able to find some 60 gigabyte models, but I think the smallest one generally available these days is 80 gigabytes.

Just pick the one with the games/movies you like. I believe you can only get an 80GB (if you're buying new) at the moment.

I have a 60gb (I think) use it mainly for blue ray films though i do have gta4 and resident evil5 both petty good games.

i've downlaoded some of the phase 2 star trek episodes and put them on a usb flash they seem to play pretty well

funny games i suggest are lego batman and lego star wars

the original idea of getting a ps3 was at the time it was touted as being able to play ps2 games but that went out the window for some wierd sony reason stil it is a good machine
