Playmates Toys

A common complaint I hear from toy collectors is that they don't want to get started buying a new set of figures (e.g. the first/only wave from Playmates) if they don't know that they'll be able to finish the set. .

That was the issue in the early 2000s with Art Asylum / DST's 7-inch TOS figures; it started off as a very promising line, with solos of the main characters (including villains such as Kor, Kang, the Gorn and Khan), two-packs (e.g., WNMHGB Kirk and Spock), exclusives (e.g., Kirk and Pike in captain's chairs, Kirk with the Phaser rifle)--the works, but it was cancelled just as it was taking deeper dives into variants or new characters, seen with prototypes of McCoy in his medical smock & Chapel, respectively. The sudden cancellation of the line left fans feeling blindsided--that the line was--in the end was another half-effort like many film/TV toy lines.

If you really wanted to you could probably put together the main crews of TOS-Voyager from the old playmates line pretty in-expensively via eBay. Except for maybe Seven of Nine. If I recall she was shortprinted because she joined Voyager as the line was petering out.

Trying to piece together the crews from the AA/DST line is really tough and expensive.

Me: "The perfect starship toy doesn't exist."
Playmates: "Hold my Romulan Ale."

I'm speechless right now, I'll let the photos speak for themselves.

She's beautiful. Gorgeous. PERFECT.
Thank you so much! I've been looking for reviews and haven't found any. The deflector looks really good, and it's nice they also added some window lights at least on top in the center there. It just needs minor tweaking to be perfect: make some of the bottom windows black as well, extend the engine section details up to the deflector (where this one has no textures at all it seems), and move the registry a bit cause it's off center. Maybe because the second dash is supposed to be shorter. You can see that's it's not symmetric based on the escape pods. But those are minor things. I'm seriously considering getting this one... will the saucer lights also work when separated? The AA/DST one had batteries in both parts, IIRC. And there's no second stand, right?

No second stand, and the lights don't work in the saucer when separated. That being said, for just $40 it's still cheaper than the AA/DST one by almost $25. I actually prefer this one; the AA/DST ship was needlessly overcomplicated, and half the features on mine stopped working after the first year or so. I was really just looking for a toy that looked cool as a bonus. If you're looking for a "toy" that is actually a highly detailed model replica like the AA/DST version then you'll be disappointed. This ship is definitely for kids (and kids at heart) who want to play with their toy ships. :)

The original Playmates D started my collection, and it's still great to look at. I hope some reviewer will show both next to each other and highlight the differences. What are the sounds?

Now there is a review video! Several sounds per button, lights stay on for a while, and there's a separation sound.
The old one had more details, I think because the windows were deeper and you could see them better, and the new one has yellow escape pods instead of gray ones. Odd that they chose to make it less detailed

It was cancelled because Toys R Us dropped the line IIRC. That was pretty much the writing on the wall and the subsequent figures they made were short runs for conventions mainly.

The bridge lights are actually really nicely done and the light blocking is surprisingly good for a toy. The nacelles look nice too. The separation sound is a cool bonus that I wasn’t expecting at all.

It’s just a shame the ventral is so undetailed - the lack of the lower saucer phaser strip is frustrating. The old one had better detailing overall, but the new one has slightly better paint apps. The good thing about the old one was that it was so easy to add more detail - as a kid I used a sharpie to colour the windows black.

They still have molds for the Warbird and Vor'cha as well-I bet
These recent releases are entirely new molds that seem to have way more screws holding them together. This leads me to believe that the toy safety laws have changed in the last 25-30 years, so they probably can't use any of their old molds (which may not exist anymore, or be degraded and useless, anyway). Therefore, I think it's wide open for what they could conceivably do next, but I'm guessing it will be another Enterprise, likely either the 1701-E or SNW.

While I prefer the final version. That early model isn’t terrible. Maybe if Eaglemoss hadn’t gone under they’d have done a model of it.
