I think it was more of a concept than anything else. The ship looked like it was a papercraft model of the Enterprise E where the saucer section flipped open to reveal a small version of the Protostar bridge.

Yeah, I don't think we've ever seen the final version. Unfortunately all of the photos from the most recent ToyFair were taken from orbit.

Found it! Took me a while to wrestle this from the depths of the web.
The size of the model is given as 60cm.

Cool. So yeah, it’s like a smaller version of the old 1701-D bridge playset but with a cardboard mini ship attached.

or an upscaled version of one of the innerspace playsets.

I wonder if they'll actually go with the playset or just do an electronic ship like last years TOS Enterprise.

I’d rather have an electronic ship, especially since Eaglemoss or whoever takes the license won’t be doing a Protostar for a while.

but if the line is geared more to kids…like the show…they may go with what’s in the picture there.

I just noticed that the Protostar prototype picture says something about a “Trek Tech” “figure comes to life” play feature, which seems to have been abandoned for the actual figure releases.

Maybe, although, it sounds more like that gimmick the Star Wars figures had ages ago with the chip that could play sound clips.

Might be connected with the Q codes on the back or was abandoned similar to the Force Link Hasbro tried.

How was Playmates quality for StarShips?

I loved them. The E-D impulse was a tad bit square…but I bet they will fix that.

They have lots of old molds.

They are real good quality but the thing to remember is they are toys meant to be played with. So they are a bit exaggerated in design.

They won’t look like something from Eaglemoss or Art Asylum/DST.

I don't know if they'll use them. I haven't seen a proper comparison, but from the photos, the new Playmates TOS Enterprise looks different (and less accurate) than the one they did in the '90s.
