Playmates Toys

Was it? I remember Saavik having one that was a bit more of an updated TOS version, but don't recall them reusing the TMP one.
Whoops. That's what I get for looking at a picture before bed. I am wrong. It's a different prop.

The TMP tricorder never actually appeared in TWOK, did it? Both Chekov and Saavik were using that clunky dustbuster-looking thing. I think I read something about them using generic stock props for some items for budgetary reasons. Funny they didn't use TMP tricorders, since they did use the TMP phasers. Maybe they couldn't find them.

Anyway, I'm glad Spock comes with the TMP tricorder.

The TMP Tricorder never appeared outside of that film.

The Tricorder in TWOK was a rented prop from the now-defunct Modern Props, which also supplied a lot of the computer banks in Regula One.

A more TOS-like Tricorder was designed for TSFS.

Yeah, the TWOK tricorder is very ugly. Lacks much on the way of feeling functional.

Also, I liked the TMP wrist communicators much better than the ones that Terrell and Chekov had in TWOK, which looked more like a jumbo version of the Casio C-80 wristwatch that you could get at the local department store.

That's what's missing from these new figures... a communicator accessory! Okay, so one of the things that comes with Kirk is supposed to be a wrist communicator. I guess it's the one at the top of the packaging? It's pretty ginormous, though.

Yeah, I put the wrist communicator on my Kirk. It’s hilariously oversized. Much like those Spock gloves.

*sigh* Perhaps we can look forward to better-looking but overpriced third-party 3D-printed accessories some time soon.

Overpriced? I've had great luck with a lot of different printer outlets, especially cults3d. It takes a bit of searching but I usually can find stuff that works well for my purposes. Ebay is a mixed bag, but there are some vendors that are reasonably priced.

The accessories for Kirk and Spock come from the original line (except for the gloves), but obviously the 90s figures were based on TMP. So Kirk has a wrist communicator and Spock the TMP tricorder.

They could have just used the TWOK comm and tricorder that came with the Saavik figure. Maybe they should run the next wave past someone with an encyclopedic knowledge of Playmates figure accessories. I volunteer!

Part of the fun would be using old and new accessories, right? So if one already has the Saavik figure then it could be fun to line them up. I might have to try that.

All of the accessories in the TWOK and TNG figures are just reused from the old line, except for Spock's gloves. They just could have easily used more appropriate ones.

But yes, it's cool that they all mix and match!

I'll be honest the accessories are one of my favorite parts of the Trek figures, whether they are "appropriate" or not. They just struck me as something designed to mix and match as part of the character's overall story.

Anyone else get a Burnham with what seems like a faulty right arm?

Like, the upper segment of her right arm is actually for the left side, so as a result the right forearm only bends backwards and not forwards. Are they all like this?

Burnham was one I was waiting on to see in person before I buy but I’ll keep a lookout.

after all the delays, the last thing this line needs is major production errors. Hopefully it’s just a one off.

I dropped by a local comic book shop near my work today, but they didn't have the new Trek figures.

Hmm... I just noticed that Target says "No release date yet" for all the Playmates Trek figures. Other sites say they are anticipated for this month.

Planning on stopping by the local Target this weekend and see if they have hit yet.

Same here, I usually do a lot of my weekend shopping at target anyway but I may stop at an extra one just for the heck of it.

the Target app still says preorder now and receive by Sept 15. So who knows.

Nada.

Although I did see about 5 plush Data’s that I’d never seen before.

Review of the phaser.

Basically what I'd assumed, it has all the issues of the original toy but has been updated with much better lights and sounds.

If you want an accurate toy phaser it's not a patch on the DST version, but it's a fun and affordable toy.

If they reissued the original TNG phaser and tricorder with these kinds of upgrades they could be onto a winner.
