Playmates Toys

Interesting…there are a bunch of new listings on eBay from Great Britain that show Kirk, Spock, Kahn, Data, Picard and Riker on cards that look like the ones for Saru and Burnham.

Yes, I saw these. Possible that we here in the UK/Europe aren't getting the retro-style cards, and are instead getting the figures released in a uniform style? (I noted the cards are multi-lingual). I would be all right with this, I think I prefer the 'Universe' blue ones anyway! But I open the figures, so in a way I'm not bothered either way!

Looks like the phaser and Enterprise are now available in the US; a poster on www.tfw2005.com posted pictures. Enterprise rang up at $39.99 at Wal-Mart, phaser is $24.99.

Yeah, it'll be interesting to see how it pans out.

I think the idea is that they appeal both to kids (especially Prodigy) and collectors, which was the case for the original line. I was a child in the 90s and loved playing with my toys.

Obviously the retro cards for the TNG and TOS figures are pitched more at collectors than children. Many of the new shows are more adult-oriented than the previous series too, so I'm not sure how large the kid-market will be.

I think there is gonna be next to no kids market for these unless mom/dad are Trekkies and the kids are by osmosis. MAYBE for the Prodigy stuff. But if these go on the toy aisle at Target (for example) instead of the collectors area I can’t see a random kid picking Admiral Kirk, Jean Luc Picard or Michael Burnham over He-Man, Baby Yoda, Batman or Captain America.

Honestly, I do worry that there won’t be a second wave (not counting Prodigy) given the apparent troubles they’ve had getting the first wave into stores and online. Not that the troubles are their fault, it’s a world wide issue. In fact, I don’t expect Prodigy stuff until early next year given the roughly 2 month delay we’ve experienced with the main line.

Yeah I don't mind the generic packaging - I'll be opening them anyway!

Enterprise looks great. It's obviously based off the 90s molds but has been upgraded with much better lighting and features. It's a fantastic looking toy.

The only gripe would be the screw holes, but they would be easily filled.

FWIW it looks like Target has all the figures up for preorder with a “deliver to you by 9/15” date on them. So either they will miss delivery or they will be hitting shelves later this week or early next.

they have the Phaser but no dates on it.

Man, those screw holes though….
If I pick it up I would be curious to remove it and see how the electronics are done. I don't imagine the writing is that complex but I'm curious if the placement of the wires necessitated those screw holes.

Also, I am curious about any of the original Playmates Enterprise's molds and their screw hole placement.

As per usual, everyone is making a fuss and I'm over here going...

Wyld Stallyns at Target??? EXCELLENT!!!

The Enterprise-P looks like a pretty robust toy to play with. I like how the escape pods resemble phillips head screws. I also like the illuminated windows beneath the bridge module and under the saucer. That impulse drive needs better containment as it's clearly about to explode. To say nothing of the warp engines with their exhaust manifolds...

In a darkened room this must make the ultimate night light for kiddies. Looks great!

For the $59.99 price I would have hoped that they could have retooled the ship a little and come up with less visually pronounced system of fastening the pieces together. The screws are an eye sore. At least apply a flat enamel paint on the heads to match the hull so they don't contrast so much.

The Diamond Select TOS Enterprise is a fair comparison as it was a toy and not a high-end collectible. It certainly wasn't perfect, but It had similar electronic functionality with less obtrusive physical connections for a similar price point. Ten years ago it was $40, which is equivalent to $51 in today's money (and for a while you could occasionally find one for half the retail price).

I don’t like the screw holes but they wouldn’t be a deal breaker if I decided to buy it. I get that they are just reproducing a toy they released 20+ years ago not a studio quality prop/replica.

your right, I’m sure the wiring is probably super simple.

also, it does answer the question of what part of the store these are gonna be located in. The collectibles not the toys.

There seems to be some leeway in the stores around me, probably best to check both sections anyway.

Well, maybe it depends on the store? But, yes I would be looking in both sections to be sure. I definitely found the Mego figures at the collectable section in Wal-Mart, but in the toy section in Target.

I’ve only ever seen the Megos in the collectible section. It’s been the DC Universe and (some) Funkos in both places.

the Trek stuff just seems more suited to collectibles.

Funkos are always in the Toys in Target too lol

I would put the ships maybe in the Collectibles but not the figures or the phasers. Especially when the Prodigy stuff is released.

Really, I’ve seen a few Funkos in toys at Target. Usually Marvel or DC. But the vast majority in collectibles.

Placement could depend on the line too. The legacy stuff in collectibles, the Prodigy stuff in toys.

I guess we’ll find out when the stuff hits wide.

Retailers nightmare here. No matter where they place it someone will miss it.
