Playmates Toys

If they re-release those I can die a happy man. Well, after I've enjoyed playing with them for several years (don't judge me - toys were meant to be played with :p )

As far as the USS Protostar goes, no wonder they are taking their time. Somehow the replica is gonna have to have an electronic spring-loaded third nacelle that pops out of panels on the stardrive while simultaneously lighting up. Sounds like a logistical nightmare to me!

But it would be one hell of a toy!

I got my toys out of the box over the last couple of weeks. All still good! Top of the Enterprise-D is a bit yellowed so a re-release would be good. I forgot how cool the sounds are. I must have nearly worn out the photon torpedo button as a kid.

I was surprised to see the Star Trek V assault phaser goes for crazy money on eBay! Tempted to cash in to fund the new toy line.

What circumstances will be required for the new Playmates wave of Star Trek figures to be as massive as the 90s toyline?
.

Nothing is going to be as good as it was in the 90s.

Even TV shows had toy tie ins. I wish 3D printing had been invented earlier. And SpaceX…

That having been said…the Pixar Hyperspeed Series Assortment HHj93 (Buzz Lightyear ship set) looks awesome—so step it up, Playmates!

Entertainment Earth have pack shots! They look like renders/proof of concept rather than final images, so may change.

Kirk, Spock and Khan use almost the same card as the Classic Movie wave from 1995 (the one with the wrong Enterprise!). They also seem to use a lot of the same accessories, but have more generic stands. Spock has his radiation gloves, which is really cool. The rest of the accessories are silver/grey instead of weird neon colours, which is appreciated!

Picard, Riker and Data again are pretty much identical to the original 1992 wave 1 cards, which just look awesome. They also have the same accessories as the original figures, except for the generic delta base.

Burnham and Saru have the new Star Trek Universe card, which looks really clean. I love the character art.

And the TOS Enterprise box is almost identical to the 1995 box, with the same amazing Ron McPhearson art.

Cool, Spock has swappable hands. I love the retro packaging, not sure about the Discovery packaging though.

And it didn’t dawn on me that this is WoK’s 40th Anniversary. No wonder they went with Kirk, Spock and Kahn from the movie instead of TOS versions.

I don’t mind the solid color for the accessories as long as they stick with silver, black, etc…and not hot pink or neon green.

I do wonder though, why they add the phaser beam to the TNG phaser and not the TOS/Disco.

Nothing is going to be as good as it was in the 90s.
Indeed. But they are attempting that appeal.
I do wish the accessories weren't all one solid color.

I know that's how it was back in the 90s but I'd expect a little more detail now.
But this isn't about now. This is about appealing to people who bought these toys in the 90s and now feel the need to collect them. It's Trek attitudes in a nutshell-remain in the past as long as possible. So, the appeal isn't in making figures in line with contemporary designs, but appealing to the nostalgia of the past.

I do wonder though, why they add the phaser beam to the TNG phaser and not the TOS/Disco.
Nostalgia. TOS never did the phaser beam. TNG did.

Those package shots do bring the feels. However I also feel what @fireproof78 is saying, perhaps Star Trek should look to the future… (pun/joke intended)

Discovery have modern packaging, Prodigy will too. The legacy figures get nostalgic packaging because it’s maybe less likely kids are buying them.

It’s no different to the Mego figures or those Star Wars figures in replica Kenner cards.

Here are my guesses for Wave 2, which I assume will be sometime in 2023...

The original announcement that Playmates would start releasing a new line of toys included a couple of teases that weren't part of Wave 1, so I'm gonna say we get those as part of Wave 2.

Those teases were:

1. Captain Pike (from Discovery/SNW, and in the TOS era uniform)
2. Spock from Disco season 2 (with a beard, and in civilian (I guess it's civilian?) clothing)
3. Jean-Luc Picard from Picard season 1

And I'm gonna be hopeful and say that Wave 1 will sell enough for Playmates to issue more figures for Wave 2 than they did for Wave 1. My guesses aren't for which characters I want to see, just the ones I can see them releasing as the big sellers, and one or two that won't sell as much but they'll release "for the hardcore fans" or whatever. I'm thinking the first LDS toy will be geared more toward that "hardcore fan" in Playmates eyes, and unfortunately probably DS9 too. Also, I just don't see many more Discovery options for the first two initial waves. After this second wave maybe. Michael and Saru would be the best sellers from that series and I just can't see any other character being that sought after until after more of the bigger characters from the franchise are released. Just my view, don't yell at me.

4. Captain Kirk (in TOS uniform)
5. Uhura (ditto...from TOS)
6. Worf (from TNG)
7. Q (in judges garb)
8. Borg Queen (from First Contact)
9. Benjamin Sisko (as captain, with the First Contact era uniform)
10. Captain Janeway (live action version, from the later seasons of Voyager...no hair bun)
11. Seven of Nine (in one of those one-piece outfits she wore all the time on Voyager)
12. Beckett Mariner (since the Prodigy toys look cartoony, so will the LDS toys)

I think the next logical ship release is the Enterprise-D. Maybe a TNG era phaser or tricorder.

Prodigy toys in 2023:

1. Rok-Tahk (obv)
2. The Diviner
3. Drednok
4. Captain Chakotay

Does anyone else have any thoughts or ideas what wave 2 from Playmates might include?

I’d love to see Carol and David Marcus which even Dimond Select/Art Asylum didn’t do in their TWOK line. It’ll never happen though.

More realistically Scotty in the engineering suit would be great. Such a unique costume. Those season 2 Picard Starfleet uniforms are cool too. I’d like a Rios, he’s my favourite new Picard character. Be great to get some more female characters too. Raffi and Seven for eg. 1 out of 8 in the first wave is pretty disappointing.

I mean, it would make sense to give us reps from other shows, like I posted above. 3 for DS9, 3 for Voyager and 2 for Picard (or SNW) to mirror the 3/3/2 TOS/TNG/DSC.

But maybe they decide to finish filling out those crews and give us Bones, Scotty, Saavik, Worf, Troi, Laforge, Tilly and Stamets.

just too early to say.

I've got to many Sci-Fi figures now.
(in the 4-5 hundred range)
While there may be a few specific figures I might have an interest in now, I doubt I'll begin to go full force like I did back then.
The fact that most 3/4" figures are in the $12 to $15 dollar range will also be a factor limiting my purchases.
