Playmates Toys

It was also re-released in a three-pack with Yar and Barclay, but only the original carded figure is considered rare. The re-released figures didn't have numbers on their feet.

Ah! Thanks for the info! That's the difference, then. I just checked, mine doesn't have any numbers. Guess it's not rare after all, then. Would really have surprised me if my action figure source had actually given away a super rare figure. ;)

Even the original figure wouldn't fetch much without the package I don't think! Collectors just love 'mint in box'.

Personally all of my Star Trek toys are opened and played with!
So with these rare figures, a loose figure is also rare and expensive - but I think that Picard will hardly have any loose figures since the release said that it was extremely limited - and only crazy people would have unpacked it :D

True. Has to come with packaging to be of true worth to a collector.

I'm right with you tho - the JLP figures I bought with packaging have all been "unpacked" and put up. I wouldn't have the space to hang up packaged figures, and since many of my figures were gifts from Trekkies who no longer needed their JLP figures, packaging was never even an option. It wasn't until some collector yelled at me once when I mentioned that I unpacked my huge JLP Insurrection dress uniform figure because I wanted to know if you could undress it (that's me, always the curious "it's for science" type) that I even HEARD of the whole "keep the figure inside the packaging!!!!" thing.

the statement that the figures are valuable in packaging always depends on the collector's focus - I personally collect the figures MOC (mint on card) and the card variants (Canada version) but my focus is accessory colors and I collect that loose and then leave it gradet (UK Grader)
recently a trifold borg was sold on ebay for 2000 eur - somebody spent 1995 eur for cardboard and 5 eur for the borg figure, because that's how much it is worth if the figure is loose

WTF - 2000 Euros!? Hearing (or rather, reading) this makes me feel a LOT less weird about being a collector whose only focus is "is this a Jean-Luc Picard figure and if so, does it look like him"...

Yes it was awesome, I also sat in front of the auction and watched it until the end and then almost fell off my chair. It was definitely the highest price for a star Trek figure I have ever seen. But you shouldn't overestimate it - the figure on the card is rare, but at this auction someone absolutely wanted this figure and that's why the price exploded :)

Yeah the 'Trifold Borg' is the rarest Playmates figure - I think it was just 500 produced for a launch event for First Contact. I've got no interest in stuff like that because it's just the regular figure.

Has a cool card back tho lol

yes playmates said that they produced about 500 - but you don't know exactly.
but it is only a merchandaising product not an officially sold figure - that's why for me it is only merchandaising
But as I said it is just a rare cardboard with a borg figure on it that is not rare
But these are only statements from a disappointed collector - if they were in my collection, I would of course say something else :lol:

this is for real connoisseurs - and very rare figure
who recognizes the rare in this figure?
the interesting thing is - if you unpack this figure, the rarity is over

Has it got two pogs or something?

Whatever happened to the design an alien competition? Did the winner ever appear on the show?

Same. I rarely buy in package any more since the pricing is for more than I am willing to spend for something that I fully intend to have out, play with or otherwise actually handle.

One pog, that you had to press out of the card yourself.
I don't know what happened with the alien design thing.

it is the round sticker that invalidates the design a alien contest outside of the usa - and this sticker was only on the figures sold on the uk bandai. since most of the time did not pay attention to this sticker and mostly unpacked the figures or if they collected MOC they preferred to collect the us variant without the bandai sticker - there are probably only a few figures left in the variant.

the winner (Paul Lona) of the contest really appeared in the ds9 episode "the muse" and he won with the alien concept Rasiinian
