Plasma TV looks dim in store

Could be also that the "Game" button uses those inputs because maybe those inputs put the system into "game mode" Speeding it up for gaming. I'll look into it for you when I get to work. I'll ask my Plasma Guru also.

Thanks I appreciate that. Even on the non-game HDMI input, it seemed faster to me. And I noticed I was seeing my targets a little better on COD:MW2. (I still suck, but that's a different story.)

So other than trying to understand the "Game" button thing, I'm pretty happy with it so far.

By ISF calibration, are they talking about a kid with a laptop and a little Spyder monitor calibrator?

If one were to pay real money for a service like that, might as well hire a seasoned professional with a non-contact color analyzer and knowledge of service menus.

No, he uses about $6000 worth of gear, including a colorimeter connected to a signal generator (doesn't use your DVD player or cable/satellite box) and affixed to your monitor.

He'll do a Day and a Night calibration for 2 inputs (usually cable and DVD/BD). To do it right will take about 1.5-2 hours.

Yeah I want to look at that G10, but I'm liking what I read about it.

Looks like BB Geek Squad is my only ISF calibration option around here and I hear that's kind of pricey.

Geek Squad ISF is $199 right now. Through the first week of December Ithink.

Well I took the plunge today with the Panasonic G10. I'm on vacation in FL and I checked my Iphone Best Buy app and they had dropped the price of the G10 by $300. I then went to a local BB here to see a G10 in action and was impressed with what I saw. Came back to my g/f sister's house, got online, and ordered it.

Will be delivered on 12/7 so probably will miss the Geek Squad ISF deal unfortunately.

Again thanks to all for your help and advice.

Congrats! So, how are you liking your G10??

So far so good. It probably still is a bit dim (and that's not even really the right way to describe it) for my taste, BUT overall I really like it. It was definitely a step up from my Panny LCD rear projection and I can see a big difference in the way the Xbox 360 looks on it and maybe not quite as pronounced of a difference with the PS3.

In all candor, I probably won't spend the money for calibration, it's just too much to spend (essentially 25% of the cost of the TV) but I'm going to research to see if there's a cheaper way to get there. I know there are calibration discs you can get, but it seems like most of the user reviews aren't the best.

For the most part, if I could maybe brighten it up a tad, and perhaps back the red tint off a bit, I think I would be very happy with the picture. Not that I'm unhappy now.

OK, since this seems to have become an all-things-TV thread...I have a question too. I was in Sears the other day and saw a new LED TV...they had the Blu-ray of Star Trek playing so I stood there and watched it for a few minutes.

It looked awful. Like the movie had been filmed on video in a brightly lit room. The special effects were sharp, but TOO sharp, beyond the point of looking anywhere natural to the point of distraction. Was that most likely a set up issue or what? Because if that's what LED TV is supposed to look like, then ugh...

That film is a bad example. At the risk of derailing this thread, the cinematography and coloration were horrendous. Nature scenes and such are usually better benchmarks like Planet Earth or Baraka.

An "LED TV" only differs from traditional LCD sets in that they are not backlit with cold cathode tubes. It saves some power and can make thin cabinet production easier. RGB dynamic LED sets can drastically increase contrast and black levels, however.
