Plasma TV looks dim in store

You know Irishman, I'm starting to come around. I'm taking another look at the Panasonic G10.

How about the Samsung 850 plasma? I was impressed with the picture but I'm hearing a LOT of negative reviews about a buzzing noise.

Fuck the 850 it's thin but thats about it.. If you want a Plasma get a G10. THXTHXTHX.. Then get it Cal'ed

Yeah I want to look at that G10, but I'm liking what I read about it.

Looks like BB Geek Squad is my only ISF calibration option around here and I hear that's kind of pricey.

Look up the prices.. Our geeks do it for $300.. The local "high end audio/video" shop does it for about $650.. It's the same thing.

Find a store which you can physically mess with the settings menu. THat's the best way, it lets you tinker around and set it to what you want.

Geek Squad ISF is $199 right now. Through the first week of December Ithink.

By ISF calibration, are they talking about a kid with a laptop and a little Spyder monitor calibrator?

If one were to pay real money for a service like that, might as well hire a seasoned professional with a non-contact color analyzer and knowledge of service menus.

I have a 50" LG Plasma that I bought last year. I find that compared to Plasma, nothing replicates a true "cinematic" image. LCDs are nice, but there's something not quite right about the image. I'm definitely not a fan of the 120Hz frame interpolation feature either (makes everything look like it was shot on a cheap camcorder!).

Having said that, I'm buying a 32" LCD for my "man room" for gaming and watching the odd movie on my own. However, until the tech is better, I can't see myself switching from Plasma for my main screen.

Well I took the plunge today with the Panasonic G10. I'm on vacation in FL and I checked my Iphone Best Buy app and they had dropped the price of the G10 by $300. I then went to a local BB here to see a G10 in action and was impressed with what I saw. Came back to my g/f sister's house, got online, and ordered it.

Will be delivered on 12/7 so probably will miss the Geek Squad ISF deal unfortunately.

Again thanks to all for your help and advice.

It's called buy it today... The Cal won't even be done for a month or so. Your TV needs at LEAST 100 hours on it. I say 200 hours.

Got the G10 home today. A few initial impressions/comments.

It definitely looks better at home than in the store but I still noticed a "dimness" with some channels. It was most noticeable on ESPN's MNF. It was just a bit dull looking, but not so much that I didn't like it, it was just different.

My Xbox 360 looked a lot better, I couldn't really see a difference with the PS3.

Couldn't get the "VierraCast" (internet TV) to work. The TV is not near an ethernet cable, so I have to use a wireless adapter. It's the same adapter I use on my Xbox and I have used it to hook my blu-ray player up to get firmware updates. So I know it will work with a variety of internet ready devices, but it wouldn't work wiht this TV. Couldn't acquire a DNS, and it said something about my router and DHCP. I googled that and I still have no clue what that means.

I ran the "anti-burn in" scrolling bar a few times just to see what it looked like and as the white vertical bar scrolled from left to right, it seems to reveal a lot of "bad spots" in the screen. But I don't notice anything when watching TV so I'm not terribly concerned about it, but it makes me wonder.

Overall I think I'm gonna like this TV. Although I don't really plan on using the internet TV features, it still kind of irks me that I couldn't get that to work.

This is a question for any G10 owners that might be on here. The TV has 3 HDMI inputs, 2 component inputs, 2 composites, and a PC input. And you have the ability to go in and label each of the inputs (Game, cable, satellite, etc). Out of the box HDMI 3 and Video 2 are defaulted to GAME. On the remote there's a GAME button that will automatically jump to HDMI 3 and then scroll between HDMI 3 and Video 2.

If I go in and label HDMI 1 GAME, it disables this function on the remote. In fact, in order to restore the functionality, I had to reset the settings to factory defaults. But according to the manual, I should be able to change the labels and still have the remote functionality.

So I don't know if I've got a defect, or as is often the case, the manual simply doesn't adequately explain the procedure. If it's a defect, on the one hand it's really not that big of a deal. But on the other hand, when you spend this much money on a TV, it damn well ought to work correctly, right out of the box.

Anybody have any experience with this?

So you're thinking they just made HDMI 3 and Video 2 defaults and nothing I can do can change that? Well that's kind of what I thought at first, and admittedly the manual is somewhat vague, but the way I read the manual, I should be able to change the labels to the other inputs. (Well I know I can change them, it's just getting the remote to recogonize them that's the problem.)

It's not a deal breaker by any stretch of the imagination, I can easily use the input button (which works fine regardless of label) to switch from input to input. I just wish they would have flat out said, "The game button works ONLY for HDM3 and Video 2" if that's how they've designed it. But then it's not unusual for a manual to be less than helpful.

EDIT TO ADD: Got an e-mail into Panny support this morning, so hopefully I'll get a definitive answer soon.

That makes sense to me. An "HDMI 3" button is a lot easier than a "whatever is labeled GAME in the settings" button.

The obvious solution here is to plug your game console into HDMI 3.

Well the reason I wanted to change it was because HDMI 3 and Video 2 are side inputs and I really didn't want cables hanging from the side of my TV, I want them in back. Well it's no problem to simply set the picture mode setting to "Game" for HDMI 1 or 2 and just use the input button to switch to the appropriate input as desired.

Like I said, not a big deal, but in reading the manual I should be able to rename the labels and the "Game" button should still work and it doesn't. If that's by design, it just seems really odd to even put the game button there in the first place.

I suppose I could but it's really not that big of a deal. I guess it's just the "anal side" of me that was wondering why it didn't work the way it APPEARS it should work by reading the manual. If I get a response from Panasonic and IF it turns out it is defective, I'm not sure what I'll do. Don't really feel like packing it up and having to mess with replacing/reparing it for such a minor issue. But as I said before, a new TV OUGHT to be working properly, period.

I'm actually probably more puzzled by why the internet adapter couldn't get a DNS for the TV when it does for any other device it's attached to.

Overall, so far, it seems like a really good TV. It's just these couple of techinical issues/glitches that have kind of annoyed me with a brand new TV.

Well whaddya know. Hooked up the wireless adapter again for shits and grins and this time it worked like a charm. Go figure.

And I think Mr. B is probably right on the "Game Button" thing, it just defaults to those 2 inputs and you can't change that.
