there is a model of a previous Enterprise in the Conference room of the Enterprise A or was it a picture in D? But anyways there is an older generation ship that has rings around a center ship. My thought was this was the start of Plasma coil propulsion prior to the NX. The nacelle does a better job at plasma propulsion in efficiency, and so making it an all in one coil and centrical shunt to provide the same job as the larger external rings around the hull that may have had a shunt inside the hull.

What I gather is that rings or nacelle the technology is adapted to provide propulsion by varying plasma charges which may be what later nacelles show in difference in color. Red is either hotter or colder than blue and energy in heat may also be thermal energy and allow the difference of charges. The difference in charges allow for polarity push maybe. Also in shuttlecraft a plasma battery maybe charged to last for hours in the same difference of charges.

so the thought is that pre-warp earth may have had impulse plasma propulsion. sort of on that topic I wanted to mention that it is possible that a wave generator or warp oscillator tucked behind the frontal plasma you see on the show alters the frequency through the plasma like an a deflector accomplishes by frequency modulation across a plasma when magnetized. Alters the frequency output to a warp field that emits around the ship generating a warp field of sub-space relative to the ship as if a pocket of space inside outerspace and with affects common to that within the space. back, I just like the precursor to Star fleet ship as it may be a plasma ship that exhibited propulsion through external stages of Plasma that surrounded the ship. I think it may be pre-warp and a plasma propulsion that used contained charged hydrogen to do what a nacelle does at impulse without warp by applying the second charge temp from the ship inside the rings. Contained plasma ring and differing charged shunt by thermal differences is mostly what I gather is the nacelle without warp. The warp nacelle is likely using the frontal plasma pocket to emit through plasma reacting the frequency to generate a different reaction that alters space to relativity such as a star does within its shell of influence or out to solar shield.
