Re: Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides - Discussion and Revie

I really like the title.

Otherwise, I have absolutely zero interest in this.

Re: Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides - Discussion and Gradi

Well, PotC is one of my favorite film franchises, so I'm looking forward to this.

Dream, do you know if there is also a standard 2D release, or is this strictly 3D? I really don't relish the notion of sitting there for 2 hours plus with a pair of those silly glasses perched over my regular spectacles.

It going to be showing in both 2D and 3D. I'm going with 2D for the same reasons.;)

^

Thanks for that! They've been pimping the 3D thing on the TV spots so much I was beginning to think I couldn't see it 'normally'.

:techman:

Those mermaids...

Re: Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides - Discussion and Gradi

My expectations were quite low after... well the last couple of attempts at sequels and Brit film mag Empire giving it only 2 stars.
However I have to say whilst not nearly as good as the first it still managed to be bloody enjoyable, after a slow start a brillaint sequence with mermaids really works and from there its a proper adventure romp.
in a way it felt cheaper then the other entires with what felt like less settings and smaller battles but the more linear narrative makes up for it.
It's nothing amazing but it does what it sets out to do.

Glad to hear that you liked it. While I liked both DMC and AWE, I thought both were a little bloated in terms of plot. Hearing that OST is easier to follow is great news for me.

Looking forward to this as the wife and I have very few movies in which our interests overlap.

Captain Jack Sparrow unexpectedly finds himself on an adventure with the fierce pirate Blackbeard and a woman from his past.

The movie is being released everywhere this week. The newest installment will not have the Will or Elizabeth and will focus on Jack and new characters.

I am so going to see this. But is nessary to see it in 3d?

Definitely not. I saw it at a press screening a couple of days ago and while I quite enjoyed it (much more than parts 2 & 3), the 3D was a bit distracting. From what I understand, they shot some shots in 3D and others in 2D and post-converted the latter. This really shows in the movie, which I found quite irritating at times.

Re: Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides - Discussion and Gradi

I am definately looking foward to this. POTC is one of my favorite film franchises and has a special meaning to me and my wife, our fist date was at CotBP. I love Johnny Depp and I have invested a lot of personal research into this franchise for a college paper that spanned the better half of a semester, I have invested a lot of time and effort in this franchis and this movie in particular, i'm not missing it.

Re: Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides - Discussion and Gradi

I was suitably entertained by the previous entries in the series, but I don't think I'll be seeing this one in the theaters.. Unless it's still playing in Eastern Europe in 2 months, while I'm there. Gotta love those 3 dollar tickets.

Re: Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides - Discussion and Gradi

I'm really looking forward to this film. I'm probably the second biggest PotC fan on the board, second to only Dream (although he may not love At World's End as much as I do). Tragically, I'm going to be at sea when the film comes out, so I'll have to wait until the following weekend...assuming either the base theater is showing it or Japan has released it by that time.

Re: Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides - Discussion and Gradi

I'm hoping my screener tonight is in 2-D. When I saw Priest the pass said "in 3-D" on it and this pass does not indicate that so I'm really hoping for 2-D!!

T-minus 8hrs till I see it.
Not that reviews ever affect my decision to see a movie I'm avoiding them here just for the sake of that often times reviewer who starts in on plot points as a means to validate his/her opinion.

I just want it to be better than AWE and not bloated like the last two. The lack of Swan and Turner can only help towards that regard I think.

I tend to agree, and I think that McShane will be great as Blackbeard.

I'm curious if anyone who's read Tim Powers' novel has seen the movie yet, and how much of it they integrated, beyond the title, BB and the Fountain.

Re: Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides - Discussion and Gradi

Nice review. It's a shame it still appears to be as bloated as ever, though. Depp kept promising that they'd return to the fun and simplicity of the original, but I guess the studio just can't help but try to make these things as "huge and epic" as possible.

Even though that's the last thing these movies really need to be.

I looked that up on my nook it sounds interesting is this what the movie is based on? I thought there was a series of jack sparrow novels?

Re: Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides - Discussion and Gradi

Tim Powers' book predates the Pirates of the Caribbean movies. It does NOT feature Captain Jack Sparrow. From the looks of things, Disney bought some ideas (and the title) from Powers, then made up their own story involving Sparrow and company. (The original book is great, though, and definitely worth reading.)

In the meantime, A. C. Crispin has written an authorized Jack Sparrow novel, which I believe is on sale now.

The impression I got was that the movie coincidentally happened to have elements close enough to the book, that Disney bought the rights to it just to avoid any potential copyright lawsuits.
