Pink skin

Rom's Sehlat

Fleet Captain
Fleet Captain
Why does Shran always call Archer and crew pink-skins? What about the humans of African descent who obviously aren't pink? Did Shran ever meet Travis?

Obviously he calls Archer "Pink Skin" because Archer's skin is pink. :p

I don't remember Shran ever meeting Travis.

I do know that in the novels set after TATV, Shran does call Travis "Brown Skin." He also calls Vulcans "Grey Skins" and Orions "Green Skins."

Travis had very little interaction with anybody -- including the crew -- so it's unlikely Shran would have had occasion to call him anything. Apparently Shran also didn't converse much with Hoshi, since she clearly doesn't have pink skin either.

Even Hoshi and Travis have skin that's far more 'pink' than Shran's. Also, it seems it's Shran's specific nickname for Archer, since he's probably the first human Shran ever met.

Obviously the writers weren't going to have Shran call people "white skin," "black skin," or "yellow skin" because some viewer out there would inevitably complain about it being racist. Nobody is going to find "pink skin" racist.

Humans all look the same to Andorians.

Hey, that's racist! :)

Probably because, to Shran's eye, even brown or beige skin has pink undertones. If I get a scrape that removes the top layer or so of brown skin, the wound will be pink. Just look at any black person who has vitiligo, the skin condition that Michael Jackson had.

At risk of becoming that viewer, it would be kind of weird to have Shran call people white and black without having any knowledge of human racial divides, since people aren't really literally white or black, they're more pink or brown. Shran's just saying what he sees. Which does not include Travis.

What colour are Andorians?

I bet you answered "blue", even though they come in white (Aenar) and green (TNG, TATV) as well.

"Pinkskin" is the same deal.

Who's this Travis person?

He's like the person on TNG that sits next to Data on the bridge and has few or no lines of dialog in a episode.
You can't even call him a secondary character because even secondary characters like Shran or Soval had more lines than Travis.

Im surprised they had him say this in the book in case it offended anyone. It did seem like a nickname just for Archer. It was meant as an nsult like "pointy ears" as people often reffered to the Vulcans as.

The fact that it might offend people is probably why they went out of their way to have him say things like "Grey Skin" and "Green Skin" - to show that he wasn't being racist.

No but he met Sisko after falling through a space-time displacement. Fortunately for Shran, Sisko was able to send him back in time again. This was due to sisko hitting him so hard after being called 'brown skin' that it warped the space-time continuum
