Pine & Quinto

I'll be really interested to see how Pine approaches the character in the next movie. Is he still going to basically be the same cocky, fun-loving guy as in this movie? Or is he going to transition into more of a serious military officer like Kirk was at the start of TOS?

What people seem to forget is that in the original timeline Kirk took command of the Enterprise approximately 11 years later. By that time the original Kirk was more mature, and much more experienced.

Abrams' Kirk is taking command at a much younger age, and although he will have to get serious about his new position, he has a long way to go before he starts to settle into the serious, experienced Kirk we all grew up on...

Chris's CSI:Miami episode came around again last night, and he played a truly slimy villain. I'd seen it before, without knowing who he was. I saw his Guardian character last week, which was a kind of down-and-out bum who'd gotten into trouble. And I saw his Nazi  in Smokin' Aces, plus his Princess Diaries' character. I've seen a clip of a movie where he plays a blind person. It seems like he's made an effort to stretch his gigs into different directions, and he creates interesting characters. I'm looking forward to seeing what he's able to do after this.

I've brought this up before (a couple of times), but Pine's performance as a prince in The Princess Diaries 2 (2004) had moments in it when he seemed like a young Kirk. There's a scene where he's trying to teach the princess archery, and it's just the kind of subtle seduction Kirk would've used in that situation. And, I swear that in 2004 he looks more like a young Shatner than he does now.

As far as the comments upthread on McCoy go, Urban took a chance playing McCoy as he did, and I think he did well. McCoy is the only real over-the-top character in TOS. Make McCoy subtle, and you lose a lot of who he is, in my opinion.
Frankly, I also don't think someone is necessarily supposed to like McCoy at first. He's the kind of person you'd have to be around for a while to know how much of his bluster is sincere and how much is truly just bluster. You'd also have to know him a while to understand that he is really a thoughtful person and not totally ruled by his passions. I hope we have a chance to see the southern gentleman in him in the next movie.

That was a great scene! It was oozing sexiness, imo. (I have no problem admitting I've seen these movies, btw.) I'm not sure I would say that I saw Kirk in that scene, as I see Kirk being more arrogant or sure of himself around women. In that scene from PD, he was more sweet and confident. Just an opinion, of course.

I should clarify my earlier statement by adding that I loved Urban in Star Trek. I just didn't think his performance was as superb as everyone was stating. That doesn't mean that the guy can't act because he can. I just felt he got a lot of credit for imitating the character rather than creating a different aspect of McCoy. That being said, the writing didn't allow him to create anything different. Regardless, Urban was fantastic in his scenes with Pine. Their chemistry was off the charts.

I always loved the character of McCoy. He was the most loveable in TOS, in my opinion, because he always wore his heart on his sleeve. His banter with Spock was always amusing because deep down you knew these two men cared and respected each other and would have died for each other. He was also the person to whom Kirk would confide in, especially about his feelings or his fears. It will be interesting to see how they incorporate the relationship between the three in the next Star Trek movie.

I didn't notice a similarity to Kirk, but it was a scene both sizzling and tender. I admit, I did back up and replay it several times.

I agree with all you said about McCoy, I guess I was just thinking that in real life, it would take a while to understand the depth of his character that goes beyond his sometimes bellicose behavior. I'm just not sure he'd be everyone's cup of tea as a chief surgeon (can you imagine him getting along with Picard?). But, he's inarguably perfectly suited for Kirk (and Spock).

As far as the PD scene goes, my daughters have the DVD and sometimes watch it. I have to admit I only paid attention after Pine was cast as Kirk, so maybe I was projecting Kirk onto the scene. Kirk may have been more calculating about what he was doing than the prince was. For the prince, maybe it was more sincere behavior. I really don't know enough about the movie to judge that.

That movie made me a Pine fan, and I really worried people would beat him up over his portrayal of Kirk.

Good points, and very insightful.

DAMN!!! i missed it. I caught it on YouTube but would have loved to have seen it in its original form...
I have him in my TiVo wish list, so I'll keep you posted when he's going to be on.
As per my promise, I just noticed on the schedule that "Just My Luck" is coming up August 1 and 2 -- on FX. I have it at 11:30 a.m. Central on 8/1 and 10:00 a.m. Central on 8/2, so check your locals. Yes, yes, that's the one with Lindsay Lohan. I haven't seen it; isn't there anything of redeeming Chris value in it?

I think for the most part they did well with the casting. I especially enjoyed Spock, Scotty and Bones. Initially, I didnt take to Pine as Kirk but after reflecting on it I think he was alright.

I thought Pine and Quinto had great chemistry as well. This contributed to them becoming the characters that they were presenting. I saw them as Kirk and Spock.

When Bones was speaking with Spock do you think he was like Kelley or did you think he made him his own you know Urban

well, yeah, just having him on screen is redeeming enough for me! but the movie is really a dog, in mho. But early on, he is this hapless, luckless guy, and well...he is adorable no matter what!

you really have to check for "Surrender Dorothy"--he is really really good as a young gay man.
