Pine "Apparently Confirmed" as Kirk

Umm...since Leonard Nimoy is reprising his role of Spock in this movie, casting a black actor to play the younger version would be a bit hard on that suspension of disbelief. I'd have no problems if they wanted to recast some of the roles with actors in different ethnicities, but since this movie is not a reboot or reimagining, I can understand why they're aren't making even more radical diversions.

Morgan Freeman may well make a great Bones, I happen to think that Denzel Washington would be superb as the Captain.

I like that, too. But why bother calling it Star Trek? Every space-opera does not need to be based on Kirk, Spock etc. Maybe someone should cast those guys in an original space opera franchise. Right now, space opera is pretty sparse (especially on TV) and I'd like to see a lot more that has nothing at all to do with Trek other than the surface stuff - spaceships and rayguns and all that.

Yeah, this is the wrong movie to change the ethnicity of the characters. When they eventually get to a complete reboot then they can do it.

Getting back on topic, I really like Chris Pine as Kirk. I saw him in that "Just My Luck" movie and while the movie was bad, he had his moments.

Who can I call a racist?

I object to the term 'racist'.

From now on, they are called 'ethnicist'

Just like this little guy -> :) I mean come on! Noseless little Asain stereotypes being used as emoticons on TBBS?! Someone running this sight is seriously ethnicist.

And check out this evil black guy ->

C'Mon, how bigoted are these monsters, letting this shit go on?!

I completely agree with your point, although I do have to admit that ever since I saw Crimson Tide I've always wanted to see Denzel Washington play a Captain in a Trek movie!

Kirk is from North America; Spock is from another planet; no ethnicity is implied.

Ethnicity is implied at least as much as Kirk being from North America and Spock being from another planet.

Back on target: I see that Pine dropped out of George Clooney vehicle adapting James Ellroy to the screen. I surely do hope the guy can't act, then: I'd rather ruin a tired Star Trek product than a movie that actually has a shot at being great.

An aside: Though Akira Class was way too quick on calling racism when people objected to casting against racial type, Kelso's post--employing pernicious racial stereotypes to lampoon the very idea--betrayed as much racism as anything short of comig flat out and using a slur or tying a noose from an oak tree ("a prank," according to the Jena school board). Funny how it's the former who gets dog-piled while the latter gets nothing from you guys. Keep up the good work!

Rey, keeping his guard up.

Hey, I called "It's on." and then got the hell out of the way.

I can't be responsible for what happens after that.

Fair enough, I guess.

Sisko was was North America (so was Sulu, for that matter) and Tuvok was from the same planet as Spock. Just sayin'...

Unless they are doing a full-on reboot (which I don't want to see because I don't trust anyone--myself included--to do it well; even NuBSG, which had far inferior source material to draw upon, threw a few too many babies out with the bath for my liking), I'd rather the producers not stray too far from apparent ethnicity and type.

Probably because I didn't understand what he said, I don't get the reference or the slang, or whatever it was, so I'll go ahead and take your word for it.

It's modern day minstrel pidgin: the fact that some blacks--the most educationally and economically disadvantaged among us--actually do speak that way makes it no less racially incendiary. Indeed, by insinuating that all blacks--even highly intelligent, highly intellectual (not synonymous), highly educated Starfleet officers (cf. Sisko and Tuvok) speak that way, it is astoundingly bigotted. Just a joke? I've heard a lot of jokes: the Klan has millions of 'em.

I just ran the current casting choices by the aforementioned hot chick.

She said, "Sean of the Dead and Harold? Is this supposed to be serious, or is it a goofball movie?"

"Serious," I replied.

She snickered and continued to cut some onions.

Yeah, I opted to make light of the comment and then move on, rather than draw any more attention to it than was necessary.

But for what it's worth, I agree that it was pretty rough.

I just saw a thread in Gen SF&F where they were busy recasting Blakes 7 - no idea who any of those characters are - and somebody decided to put Denzel & Freeman in their fantasy cast lineup. Denzel was playing some schmoe named Avon, who I presume is the faux-Kirk in the bunch. Hey why not, I'd check it out. They had Kevin Spacey, Steve Buscemi and Hillary Swank in it too so it looked like it would be a hoot.

I wasn't suggesting that where they were from was necessarily a determining factor in their ethnicity, I was merely pointing out that both their geographic origins and their ethnicities most definitely were implied by how--and by whom--they were portrayed on the show and what was revealed of their character backgrounds. Therefore, if your preference is to maintain that Kirk's birth place not be changed, prefering that he also remain caucasion is equally valid and equally non-racist.

Well, looks like Trekmovie.com is crossing out the apparently in their article title. Someone has apparently confirmed the deal for sure. :D
