Is it bad that my only opinion of Pine is that he better do something about those eyebrows if he plays Kirk??? Dye them, pluck them, something.

If I were him I would pick Star Trek over that other movie. It will definitely get more hype and could really help to launch his career.

Assuming it doesn't bomb.

I'd be suprised if it did.

Why? What is it about Kirk and Spock that dictates that they MUST be white?

Uh...maybe the fact that they are...white?

IDIC, remember?
So IDIC means giving the characters reverse Michael Jackson operations or something?

Kirk is white, Uhura African, Sulu Japanese-American. It's called continuity.

And how is that material to the performance an actor can give? Can you not see how inherently devoid of intelligence the argument of "they just are" is?

All of you who would not be willing to accept such a change in your actors, ask yourselves, are you willing to accept such changes in the asthetics of the Trek universe? Will you accept a noticibly changed Enterprise? Obviously different Klingons and other aliens? Why? Oh WHY then will you not accept such a change in your main actors?

That's not even remotely funny and I find it very offensive.

And while I am at it, did TPTB give ANY consideration to having an African American man in one of the top roles?

I thought about this. The African American actors who came to my mind as suitable for Kirk were all about ten years too old for this movie.

If they were casting older...hell, I'd like to see Morgan Freeman as Bones.

I'd buy that for a dollar. Freeman would kill in the McCoy role.

They're not. They don't exist.

Kirk is from North America; Spock is from another planet; no ethnicity is implied.

Finally. Someone who gets it. Thank you.

And, Morgan Freeman would have made a great Bones.

What dictates that they should be white (or white with green tint in Spocks case)?

79 episodes and 6 or 7 movies do tend to establish the ethnicity of the characters!

Okay, so you're saying that these characters must have a certain skin color, eye color, hair color, height and weight? After all, if we're talking visual continuity, it would stand to reason, right? Even though such things have nothing to do with their performance. Since you're so big on visual continuity, you also expect the Enterprise to look exactly the same, right? And the Klingons should have smooth foreheads, right?

Never mind my comments smacking of racism, your allegations are not only offensive but "smack" of you having a giant fucking penis on your head!

IDIC, my friend. Learn it. Live it. Love it.

In your case I think that should be DIC!

I'm simply stating that as this story is taking place within the same continuity it would be ridiculous to change the race of the characters. This does not mean I expect the film to look like it was made in the 60's with clones of the original actors, I expect to see a very modern film with extremely high production values and a good cast.

EDIT: Morgan Freeman may well make a great Bones, I happen to think that Denzel Washington would be superb as the Captain. However, neither actors are suitable for the roles in this version and that it because it is effectively a continuation of existing Trek and not a reimagining.

I actually find it refreshing--as a black man, I need to be reminded never to let my guard down in a culture that is still astoundingly racist.

Thanks, Kelso!

And yet, it made me smile.

If Kirk doesn't exist, how is he from North America?

(Just as a fun exercise, imagine what a bunch of hot chicks would think if they were reading this thread over your shoulder. I like to do that from time to time.)

Its a personal policy of mine never to go near a Trek website in the presence of hot chicks! Its something I adhere to religiously!

The wisest post you've ever keyed. :D

My oldest daughter fell in love with Chris Pine in "The Princess Diaries 2" (2004). If this doesn't make her a "Star Trek" fan, nothing will.

Cripes for a moment there I actually considered getting "The Princess Diaries 2" on DVD. I REALLY want to see whether there is any indication this guy can pull off the role.

From this angle the things you just said are not implied either. They are indeed white in continuity, it's more than implied: it is. Changing ethnic background is on the same level as changing any other part of a person. You could make Spock a human, have Kirk be an alien. No problemo. If you're not using this continuity. Ethnic background is a very important part of who we (and any developed characters) are.

Could you make Sisko Asian? O'Brien Russian? Trip Tucker Mexican? Sure, but you would have to throw out a lot of continuity and essentially start over, which is not what Abrams is doing.

I've actually got a hot chick making me dinner at this very moment, and instead of rushing over to her place, I'm lingering here and posting in this thread.

And when she asks me why I'm so late, I'll have no excuse.

And she'll say, "Cogley again?"
