Pike's Wheelchair was Nightmare Fuel

He also spends a lot of time on someone else's starship.

Yeah, Pike's chair and his condition were definitely unnerving when we only knew Pike from WNMHGB The Cage and The Menagerie. It takes on a whole other level of tragic now that we're really getting to know Pike thanks to Anson Mount's amazing portrayal. So much more of a likeable character now.
People didn't like Pike before? 🤔

Genuine question.

As performed by Hunter, Pike was considered by some to be overly pessimistic and morose in comparison to the swinging, chipper Captain Kirk.

I never disliked Pike before Anson Mount took the role. But his story and performance gave a great deal of extra weight added to an already tragic figure.

(As a kid, I saw Pike as heroic because he saved those cadets and it cost him to be handed a fate worse than death: irradiated badly and crippled to the point of not being really alive. Mount's performance and seeing that he KNEW his fate long before just makes it even more heroic on his part.)

No, it was a speculative answer why some may not have enjoyed or liked Pike's character, tying in with Hunter's performance. I'm not part of the some. But some apparently felt that way at the time, even before Kirk surfaced.
The audience couldn't feel that way because they had not seen it.

Bear in mind that the show made every effort to keep Hunter. So we may have gotten a little more of a ham fisted gunslinger action star at different points.

It wasn’t until it was clear he wouldn’t return that we got The Shat.

I recommend 'el Camino' which was about Jesse Pinkman. We can only wish Star Trek in any era was as well written, acted and filmed as BCS, BB, P & EC were.

Sometimes I fantasize about SNW being as good with continuity as Better Call Saul was.* I don't think it's an overstatement to say that BCS was the best prequel ever. As far as I can remember, EVERYTHING lined up with what Breaking Bad established.

*Probably not a fair comparison, since BCS was made by the same people right after BB ended, and SNW was produced by a completely different creative team decades after the fact, but still... It would've been cool if everything in SNW lined up that perfectly with TOS.
Yup. But it is pretty crazy how much they got from throw away lines and references on BB;

“McGill”
“Lalo” and “Ignacio”
“I convinced her that I was Kevin Costner”
“This places needs a Danny” and so on

Greenwood's take on Pike is an interesting one, and I don't think there would have been as much interest in bringing Pike back for DISCO if it hadn't been for that. Greenwood's PIke has the seriousness of Hunter without the humor and melancholy of Mount's take. Greenwood's Pike is as doomed as the Prime Timeline version, but doesn't know it. His experiences as a captain were obviously different. NCC-1701 is built much later. and so he had a very different career.
