At some point Admiral Pike should be promoted to Commander of Starfleet. Maybe not immediately after the end of Trek XI, but some years down the road. IMO, Kirk didn’t get along well with Starflleet CICs in the TOS movie era. Heck, even Prime universe Pike would have pulled strings if such a request pertained to Spock, such as retrieving Spock from the Genesis planet.

Completely off-topic but CIC just reminds me of the home video outfit who released Star Trek on tape until the mid 90's. Ah, there's that warm hit of nostalgia I needed to get me through another day...
