Pike is [Spoiler]ed?

Python Trek

Commodore
Commodore
Will we see Pike being crippled in Trek XI, making way for Lieutenant Cmdr.(?) Kirk to take over?

Beep once for "yes", if you agree with my theory. ;)

Re: Pike is Crippled?

I don't think he will be, at least in this movie. I really have no clue how things will be left at the end of the story. Pike may very well still be in command of the Enterprise at the end.

Re: Pike is Crippled?

...But we do know that Kirk will get to wear Captain braid on his shirt at some point.

And while it would be an obvious change in Trek history if Pike were crippled here rather than on that nondescript training mission, Abrams sort of promised that the biggest slap-in-the-face would come at the very beginning of the movie. Doesn't sound like a dramatically correct place for a "flash-forward" where command of NCC-1701 is transferred...

Re: Pike is Crippled?

Spoiler below:

I don't think we will see Pike's accident that bound him to that chair in this film. I read somewhere that Pike will become incapacitated and a Kirk ends up taking over command, but that doesn't mean that the injury that incapacitates Pike in this film is the same one that put him in that wheelchair.

Maybe the sequel to this (which I bet could be happening during the TOS era) will show Pike's "Delta Ray" accident happening more in accordance to what was said in The Menagerie.

Agreed. Perhaps...

Re: Pike is Crippled?

Did anyone see that 60 Minutes story where a woman and a man who are essentially in the same condition as Pike (completely paralyzed but with a fully functional brain), are being used as test subjects for brain-computer communication? Their brains are connected to the computer and are able to literally type messages just by thinking about the letters. It's amazing really. And poor Pike can only beep once or twice ha ha.

Re: Pike is Crippled?

...However, it might be that Pike lost the cognitive ability to use language. No voice synthesizer or cybernetic typewriter could ever help him, then: all they could do would be translating the "beep" into a "yes" and the "beep beep" into a "no", as that's the most complicated phrase that Pike could put together.

Re: Pike is Crippled?

Apparently it never occurred to Starfleet, or it was impossible, to simply have a Vulcan do a mind meld with crippled Pike? Commodore Mendez admitted that Pike's mind was as active as ever. However he could have known that, wouldn't this mean a mind meld would be possible?

Re: Pike is Crippled?

I don't know. It seemed like Pike could understand what was being said so presumably he'd be able to respond in his mind.

Re: Pike is Crippled?

Did they even introduce the mind meld concept in the series at that point?
