Pictures leaked!!!

Wherever or whatever they're shooting, they're about to wrap all principal photography. Memory Alpha's reporting that Los Angeles is the final location and that Abrams will complete shooting there by around May 3rd.

Hmm... so the rumor about going "up north" (I assumed Vancouver) is just for post-production?

I suppose so. Unless MA's report is faulty, but that site is usually spot on with its reporting from all I've seen.

Dunno if anyone else has posted this, but the other week I heard that Star Trek was filming out at or near Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory ("Now that is a big door!"), and that they were going to be doing plate photography in Oakland and San Francisco. I've seen references to the SF photography, but not the other. Perhaps it's second unit stuff, but interesting nevertheless.

Well, I had heard this - but I heard it from you, and I wasn't going to post it unless you did.

And yes, apparently bulking up is a requirement for Cumberbatch's character. Since this isn't a superhero flick and they demonstrate with regularity in Star Trek that one doesn't have to be particularly big in order to be superstrong, this leaves the likelihood that they mean to fulfill some preconception on the part of the public about the appearance of his character.

Most of us have come to the conclusion that the villain is an Augment of some species.

"Most of us"?

I have my doubts that JJ's big sequel will take too many leads from episodes of "Star Trek: Enterprise", a series that too few Star Trek fans even watched. A reference to a man called Archer, who had a beloved beagle, in the first film is probably as close as we'll get.

I said most, not all. The character looks human and is as strong or stronger than Spock, which means most likely he is an augment (enhancement) from his true species.

I didn't say there was only one plot to the movie. There is probably more than one, but most likely, they will all tie in together.

I think it is a character new to canon that gets superhuman strength and intelligence after coming into contact with something.

So Gary Mitchell it is then!

Or he's an alien who looks human and is as strong or stronger than Spock - there is no current evidence to say he's an augment.

Augment...smooth headed Klingon...or simply a regular human who's strong and angry enough to be able to overpower a Vulcan? Regular everyday humans can accomplish outrageously impressive feats of physical strength when anger and/or fear cause a mad rush of adrenaline throughout their bodies. Perhaps Cumberbatch is just an Earth-bred human who's so flush with anger in those leaked scenes that he can throw off attempts by Spock to put him down?

But why not an augment? It's possible that he is. Besides, much of the general (or even Trek-viewing) public never even saw Enterprise. To them, the augments might as well be JJ's invention.

Well I guess the April 30 spoilers on TrekMovie.com pretty much answered some of our questions for us whether some of us liked it or not. They may or may not make discussions in this thread more interesting. I tend to believe the former. If the three spoilers were true(I've been reassured there's a 99% chance they are)at least a little of the nagging mystery is gone.

Has the following pic of Alice Eve in costume (but behind the scenes) with Zachary Quinto been discussed here yet? Her outfit may be of significance:

I've lost track of what's been discussed where, but the color picture is on the Trekmovie site:

It's a Starfleet uniform, that's for sure. Note the blue swatches on Quinto's shoulders. There's also a patch on the left arm. No signs of rank, though.

I wonder if these are landing party outfits like those worn by the NX-01 crew more than a century earlier in "Broken Bow" and other episodes? With those shoulder patches they definitely look like they could be a hybrid of the 22nd century Starfleet landing party getups and TOS-era jumpsuits like those seen in "This Side of Paradise." Interesting. Who knows, this might be a subtle and partial nod to ENTERPRISE without having to say so. I like how J.J. and his team are finding understated ways of paying homage to other series and films without being as blunt as a sledgehammer about it. They know the hardcore fans will recognize the visual cues and make the connections without a word being said.

With the insignia in a circle and the department-coloured shoulders, they look a little bit like the costumes worn in the forthcoming prequel game:
