Absolutely!!! If you're going to do a story about Picard facing an evil clone of himself have Picard facing an evil clone of himself. If Stewart had played both Picard and the clone Shinzon you would have had a movie on par with TOS's episode Mirror, Mirror. No offense to Mr. Spiner or his fans, but we've already seen him do multiple roles several times in TNG; Datalore, Brothers, and Descent I and II. In the movie as they picked up pieces of B-4 what Trek fan didn't sit in the audience asking themselves, "Lore? Why isn't Worf, or anyone else for that matter, mentioning Lore?"

People always mention how Picard being shown as a young man in that episode contradicts his appearance in "Nemesis", but what about that episode with flashbacks about Jack Crusher's death where they show Picard as a young man played by Patrick Stewart with hair? Can anyone remember what episode that was?

Yeah, that was stupid that people were complaining that Tom Hardy didn't look like that throwaway actor. Nemesis had it's faults, but that wasn't one of them.

Problem was Tom Hardy didn't look like that actor and he also in no way looked anything like Stewart! Having him be a younger Picard simply didn't make visual sense. Maybe TPTB should of cast the "throwaway" actor to portray Shinzon, God knows he couldn't have done worst with the character.

I can't agree. I believe Tom Hardy did very well with the material he was given.

I for one found the three "young Picards" in TNG all very plausible, and with nicely familial looks:

...Well, the face is more or less okay with me. And that head is definitely shaved, even in the fictional universe: Picard never was that bald even at seventy. The bigger problem is that Picard should never have worn that uniform: jumpsuit with black collar is supposed to be only for enlisteds, and Picard never enlisted. Unless, of course, we (and Bob Fletcher) misunderstood the color scheme somehow and black collars are valid for cadets.

Or then the person in the picture is not young Picard, but an old friend of Picard's who looks uncannily like Shinzon, which is why Picard dug up this old photo...

Crusher's comment doesn't really mean she'd recognize the person in the photograph - only that she recognizes the photograph. Which Picard may well have shown her several times.

But here he is as a young ensign onboard what
appears to be the original Enterprise.
Though I can't be for certain...

I'm not quite sure how far this goes back,
but judging by the hair style, I'd say the 70's...

I can't agree. I believe Tom Hardy did very well with the material he was given.

This is a little off-topic, but I wanted to back up this statement. I realized when watching "Star Trek" 2009 for the second time that sometimes it's hard to separate performance from character. The first time I saw that movie, I simply thought the villain sucks, and therefore Eric Bana sucks in the movie. Watching it again, I realized that Eric Bana actually gave a very respectable performance. He was very intense and interesting to watch. The only problem is that his character's back story and motivation were idiotic.

This also partially explains why I really liked Shinzon after I saw "Nemesis" for the first time. One of the reasons I could overlook the contrived nature of the villain was that Hardy really brought an admirable level of charisma to the role. He was great in that scene when he tells Picard his name will be remembered long after Picard's is forgotten (or something like that). It's just too bad his hatred of Picard and plans were so forced and implausible.

Actually, our only indication that this would be true is the photo of Tom Hardy...

In ST2, there was only a single character who would have been addressed as "cadet". There were people who were collectively addressed as "cadets", and people collectively addressed as "trainees", but no single person present in the movie was said to be cadet at the time, least of all Lieutenant Saavik.

The single person once addressed as cadet was Kirk, whom McCoy called "the only cadet to defeat the no-win scenario". From this, we might speculate that Saavik, too, might have been a cadet, since she was tackling the no-win scenario - but she obviously wasn't wearing the jumpsuit.

We saw no other cadets or possible cadets from the era of those uniforms. Picard and his friends in "Tapestry" were already graduated, commissioned officers (and Saavik seemed to be, too).

So perhaps cadets and/or officers do wear jumpsuits in that era; perhaps they don't. We have no solid evidence either way. At most, we can argue that in TNG "Yesterday's Enterprise", a man in a red-collared jumpsuit had died on an E-C bridge console, apparently the Tactical, and that it would be a bit odd for a non-commissioned man to be at such an important console in an important battle. But we might be seeing a casualty replacement there or something.
