Picard's family

Maybe people are just so reliant on drone firefighting systems, that house fires, while stopped quickly enough after detection, are not immediately tended to by active, present firefighters. René might've had an accident installing the new replicator, and Robert went in to save him (or vise versa), but collapsed from smoke inhalation. The explosion began in a small room in their large estate, and by the time local sensors detected an anomalous energy reading, both were dead or near to it. The drones may not have even flown until the fire escaped to the outside or larger portions of the building, and no firefighters transported in (or could get a lock on Robert or René) until after the fire was controlled.
"Dad, the replicator's burning."
"Don't worry son, the drones will take care of it."
"Dad, the replicator is still burning and I think the house is catching fire too!"
"The drones will fix it."
"Dad, we're totally encased in fire now!"
"The. Drones. Will. Save. Us."
"Dad, I think I inhaled too much smoke *coughs and dies*"
"THE DRONES!" *shouts like Spock shouts "THE WOMEN"*

And this is why I'm a reader not a novelist :D

Fire is kind of a mundane way to kill off the last of the non-Jean-Luc Picards, even if it raises questions. I'm not sure if it would've been better to pull a Yesteryear and just have them die in a shuttlecraft accident.

And if they pulled a TMP, and said they died in a transporter malfunction, that would've been extra hard on Jean-Luc, who survived at least two transporter malfunctions himself (that time he turned into an energy being, and that time he turned into the spitting image of René).

Seriously though......

Fire spreads so fast, it's insane. Most of the 'experience' people have with fires is what they see in movies and tv. In real life, it goes so insanely fast, in minutes it would be to late. And asuming that in the 24th century accident-prevention is 100% full proof is just silly.

EDIT TO SAY:
This is a Dutch commercial, but it does accuratly show how fast fire can spread in a home. The idea is that the guy notices it, and thinks that he has enough time to simply call the emergency services and wait the 5-10 minutes it would take for them to arrive.

I was thinking Section 31 too, but what if Robert had decided to travel back in time to escape modern tech and took his son (maybe he took his wife too, but she returned to the present after they died)? And that's how they died in a fire?

Shinzon had them killed. He just escaped from the mines, and wanted to kill all the other Picards in order to make Jean-Luc as lonely and without family as he was. He had further ideas, but then the Dominion War delayed his revenge plans for awhile.

Section 31 came up with the fire excuse, rather than admit that a squad of Remans had infiltrated Earth and slaughtered the family of a prominent citizen.

Time is the fire in which we burn, eh?

Maybe he was involved in a insurance fraud plot?

Robert realised he has miscalculated the amount of accelerant to use and the fire had spread quicker than he had anticipated. The fires moved close and closer - all this for an insurance scam. As Robert succumbed to the smoke, he had one final thought 'wait a minute, don't I live in a moneyless socialist utopia - what insurance payout?'

The real mystery is to how they actually burned to death in the first place. Most times it's actually the smoke inhalation that'll get you first...

Marie obviously murdered Robert and René for the insurance money and to inherit the family vineyard. Thankfully, Lt. Columbo was able to get to the bottom of the case and bring her to justice.

Columbo wasn’t around sadly since he retired when his wife disappeared.

But how would he be paid, according to his brother, money no longer exists....;)
