Picard series confirmed post-Romulus

Kurtzman wrote/co-wrote the Countdown comic right? He might borrow some ideas from that as well.

Picard was an ambassador in it.

Yeah, I completely forgot he was the chap who destroyed Romulus in the first place. Probably the only piece of Trek lore he knows. :)

I can see it having a lot of Spock fan worship, and Picard making it his mission to achieve Spock's goal of unification. The Vulcans won't want Romulan refugees and Picard disagrees.

This would be 12 years after the destruction. Seems that most issues would have been resolved by then.
I would rather they introduced something new. I’m bored with Klingons and Romulans

A balance of power shift though, that could work, but an interstellar refugee crisis? The neutral zone alone must have hundreds of empty worlds. It might be topical, but it doesn’t fit the Trek universe.
DS9 struggled with this premise many years ago with Sanctuary - for better or worse, Star Trek has established a galaxy brimming with habitable space and technologies allowing near infinite food and water production. It is difficult to create an analogous conflict to the refugee crisis with that backdrop. DS9 had to come up with a prophecy maguffin to explain why they wanted Bajor specifically.

I watched Sanctuary, it started off well then went off the deep end which was a shame.

Yeah the situations don't really match up at all.

I think this will have all been dealt with already when the show starts, we could get flashbacks though, or not.

It would be boring for the show to be about that alone and I cant see Patrick Stewart signing up for that.

That’s the episode I was trying to remember.

There are other TV sci fi series that could handle this more plausibly. An Alien Nation reboot maybe, Galactica 1980. An American Civil War that pushes Americans in to Mexico, Canada, Europe would tell the story better than Star Trek ever could.

I can see it now. Klingons are attacking Romulan planets so ships full of Romulans are heading to Earth and Vulcan, and it’s down to Picard to show the suddenly xenophobic and protectionist federation leaders the way through.

Don’t flee to the militarily insignificant town up the road Romulan, Klingon’s have posted guards on every street corner in every town. No, board this readily available starship, it holds millions. Forget the other worlds in the empire, the Klingons are there too. Just fly right past those 1500 temperate but unoccupied planets and head straight for the Federation, where those crazy aliens you’ve been raised to view with suspicion and distrust will welcome you with open arms. Desperate times Romulan, there’s no other way. And don’t forget to wear something drab, and maybe a little bit torn, and your daughter, make sure she’s barefoot and her face is dirty.

Probably the only way a refugee crisis could work in Star Trek is to introduce that sort of security angle. Yes, these people could go to Madeupicus IV with its famous waterfalls and set up a colony there. But the bad guys would follow them and destroy them. They are asking the Federation for not only space, but security - sanctuary from a third party. They are asking the Federation to commit not only space but resources and potentially lives to their defence. That could make for a story that makes sense in the Trek universe; whether it would be a good story or not depends on the writing!

This. I don't need Star Trek to be a metaphor for current events. Seeing Picard dealing with a bunch of refugee Romulans is not what I'd call an interesting show to watch.

To each their own, I think the fact that Star Trek has social commentary about current issues in the past, makes this fair play.

Except in the real world, there are refugee crises that are ongoing, having started several years ago. Events like a refugee crisis are not solved so quickly.

Plus the Romulans are not overexposed the way the Klingons are, if anything, they are underdeveloped.

During the Occupation of Bajor, we saw Bajorans living on refugee camps on other planets and the destruction of Romulus would create a giant political crisis in what is left of the Empire, with military hardliners wanting to rebuild the Empire at all costs, drafting almost everyone to be a soldier and taking any resources they can to rebuild the military, not caring that much about civilians. I could see peaceful Romulans not wanting to be part of that, imperialism going into overdrive without any of the creature comforts the Empire used to provide. I bet a lot of them would like to settle on Vulcan for cultural reasons.

I want this!!! I hope see D'Tan!

Given Picard's rep as a negotiator him navigating such a crisis would be interesting, and given the current political climate, right up Trek's alley. Interesting or not, this how Trek has been in the past.

And let's not forget that he may have even lost a friend. When we last saw Riker, he was off on a mission to try forging peace between the Federation and the Romulans. We don't know what's happened to him since, but it's entirely possible he was lost, either directly via Romulus itself when the destruction happened or by some violence offworld by some that were already uneasy and sharing some of Nero's views when it came to blaming the Federation for what happened.

Pure conjecture on my part, but I think it bears thinking about. In times of crisis, some will undoubtedly point fingers on who to blame.

That sounds like a very boring promise for a show. If PIC is going to be a political drama, then skip. I want some kickass action from SirPatrick. Sure he’s getting up there in age, but if the series doesn’t end with him going down in flames of glory saving the galaxy, battling some big baddies, I’ll be pretty disappointed.

I think the TNG films' biggest mistakes involved the "sex and shooting" Picard. I'm very much hoping for the Picard of the series, negotiator, diplomat, leader and moral figurehead taking part in something that is intricate and interesting and has as little as possible to do with blowing stuff up. Politics, exploration, discovery, alien contact. Anything besides war and 'kicking ass'.

Having said that, I think your wish is more likely to come true. Stewart himself was behind the change of direction for Movie!Picard, and he's involved heavily in this project.

While he's spry for his age, Sir Patrick is certainly too old to play action hero now. Though considering he's married to a woman the same age as I am, he probably doesn't think he's too old to get laid in the story.

If this is the case I better prepare for the "Picard is ruined" posts around here.
