Picard for President

Salinga

Fleet Captain
Fleet Captain
Here an interesting OP-Ed from huffingtonpost.com:

A handful of satirical Facebook groups nominate Picard for the highest office in the land. One such group declares, "In these trying times, the resolute leadership of Jean-Luc Picard and the masculine facial hair of [first officer] William T. Riker are just what this country needs." While these groups are farcical in nature, they raise a valid point: the fictional Picard is a greater captain -- and better man -- than the president of the United States of America for a number of reasons...

He wouldn't be able to get on the ballot anyway, dude wasn't born in America.

A Sisko / Kira ticket would be better.

;) :D

Kira was born on Bajor. She's not even a Federation national.

How about a Riker/Sisko ticket?

His controversial stance on Bajor's admission into the Federation.

Also his whole Prophet cult. I mean, that's not going to go down well in the polls...

^

Folks like guys with a professed religious belief.

Where does Riker stand on the issue? Go ahead, try to pin him down!

Folks like guys with a professed religious belief that does not include deeming yourself the messiah. :p

Whatever Riker stands on anything, it doesn't matter, he can play the trombone. Hey, it worked for Clinton...

^

Clinton had a saxophone.

Riker blowin' on a 'bone will only get him votes in San Francisco & Travis County, TX.

:p

The article would've been good if it hadn't been a complete Bush-basher.

Bah. I'm sure the Bearded-American community would be behind the Riker\Sisko ticket, there hasn't been a bearded president in over a century.

So there.

Sisko/Weyoun. That just about covers everything you'd want on a Presidential ticket. Individually they are formidable - together, UNSTOPPABLE!

As for the stipulation of being born on American soil - does it count if the "birth" is a clone activation? ;)

More evidence of the utter stupidity that is Facebook.

That said, I'd vote for Sisko. ;)

Surely anyone born under the United Earth Standard would unequally be a a citizen of all the nations of the World, making Picard just as American as he is African.

I thought this was going to be about the possbility of Picard becoming President of the UFP and was going to add that I think that would be a cool idea as, iirc, the only Trek Captain mentioned as becoming President was Archer. Do you suppose Picard could ever settle down and take on something as demanding as a position like this?

Only if United Earth is a unitary state. If it is, on the other hand, a federal state, then someone born in France may be simultaneously a French citizen and a United Earth citizen (and, obviously, a Federation citizen), but not an American citizen or African citizen.

For a modern example, I was born and have never left the United States (except once when I was six and crossed the Canadian border at Niagra Falls). I was born in the State of Ohio and have lived there all my life, save a four-month period living in Maryland and commuting into the District of Columbia every day. However, I am not a citizen of the State of Maryland, nor of the District of Columbia, nor of the Commonwealth of Massachusets, which I have never visited. Citizenship in a given state is earned through permanent legal residency in said state for at least one year in most states, if I'm not mistaken, so it's entirely possible that in order for Picard to become an American citizen, he'd have to have made the US his permanent legal residence for at least one year (if UE members follow the US's example). And all this is presuming that the US Constitution has been revised by the time of UE to allow non-natural-born citizens the right to serve as president (to say nothing of the 14-year residency requirement for the presidency).

Hard to say. I don't think Picard is the sort of man who's ambitious in and of himself and would seek the job out because it gave him pleasure to be President, and clearly he's very happy as a starship captain. However, if the time ever comes when he retires from Starfleet for whatever reason, and he honestly feels that he could better serve the Federation as President, I might be able to see him ending up in that position, though I suspect that it would take someone else prompting him to go there for that to happen.

But there again, I'm happy with President Bacco, so I'm biased. ;)

Why? That's the premise of the article - Bush is shite, and even a fictional character would make a better president.

Why the hell not, I would write in Patrick Stewart for Presieent in 2008. Better choice than any of the idiots that are running.

That article was quite good. Although as I saw, they are unforunately right, hes a Brit!

Let's not discuss real politicans and their politics in this forum. However, fictional characters and their politics are fine.

I'd vote a Picard/Riker ticket if it was avaliable, but frankly, I'd rather see a Spock/Data ticket. Just imagine the pure shock of the lobby groups trying to purchase White House influence when running up against a Vulcan and an android. :p
