PIC S3 Ships & Tech

Ah, it was removed - the picture was a BTS pic from 309 or 310. The TNG gang was waiting between shots in the Titan conference room, and the table was displaying a graphic of assorted ships and the (new) spacedock to be seen on Frontier Day. In another part of the graphic are assorted ships from the museum.

Edit: Someone from Reddit has saved the picture.

Who knows what specific ships are being used for what purpose, however there are some oldies but goldies in the mix. :)

- Worf and Raffi return to the show in a cloaked Starfleet shuttle. More evidence that the assorted treaties with the Romulans are no longer in effect. Is this the first time we've seen a shuttle-sized, cloaked ship from the AQ powers in this era of the show?

- My guess is that the shuttle Emmerson is Worf's ride, which explains how he's getting around and maybe the cloak too. La Sirena is still on Pr'duser Prime, with parking tickets stuffed into the windshield. Riker appears back on the Titan also wielding what looks to be a dolphin phaser, possibly cribbed from Worf's spec ops collection
I was under the impression Worf and Raffi brought La Sirena to the first rendezvous with Titan, so had thought they transferred Bounty's clock to La Sirena when they went after Riker. It's the Changelings on Shrike reporting to Vadic that maybe there was a cloaked shuttle (since whatever was there was invisible).

We saw it was a shuttle, though, they had it do a little shimmer so we could see it even though it was cloaked (I guess someone behind-the-scenes complained that the changeling ships would've seen Titan if she only cloaked after she dropped out of warp at Daystrom Station, too).

Yeah, I saw the shimmer, but couldn't discern the shape well. I need to rewatch the episode on a bigger TV, i guess.

Well, right off the bat there are clearly several Luna class ships on that display, but what’s interesting is that it also looks like there is the Luna class refit from STO. And I see what looks like an Intrepid class. I can’t make out the rest of the designs.

There's an Odyssey-class in there too, in front of where Frakes is sitting and behind/ahead of the Pioneer-class.

Heh, until you mentioned it, I didn't notice the "Titan-class" in there. I wonder how that's gonna work out with the Titan-A existing.

While not QUITE the same thing, there has very often been an HMS Enterprise at the same time as there has been a USS Enterprise in concurrent service. It’s possible that Starfleet’s naming system is such that it can allow a new USS Intrepid at the same time as there are Intrepid-class ships kicking around. As it stands there’s currently an Exclesior II-class USS Excelsior, and her NCC (if you believe in the generally chronological order of NCCs) was actually older than the highest-numbered Excelsiors seen in TNG.

My head canon has the PIC Exclesior being a renamed refit, keeping her old hull number for (reasons), one of them perhaps being to keep it from being too confused with her predecessor. Could something like this be applied to the current USS Intrepid? They weren’t building Intrepid-class ships anymore, but you can’t keep a good name down so in the absence of the class ship being around, the name was applied to a newer vessel?

Just reminded me that HMS Enterprise was decommissioned last month.

As far as the Intrepid name is concerned, when HMS Sheffield was sunk in the Falklands conflict in 1982, a new HMS Sheffield was built but, since the Sheffield class destroyers were no longer in construction, a Broadsword class frigate was given the name. Destroyers of the Sheffield class remained in service for another 23 years following the commissioning of the frigate (in1988)
Having said that I think this did lead to the use of Type numbers being used to refer to Royal Navy escorts, i.e. Type 42 for the Sheffields, Type 22 for the Broadswords. These type numbers had always existed but were rarely used and books I have from the 70's and early 80's tend to use class names, older classes are still referred to this way i.e. the Leander class frigates are rarely referred to as Type 12I. Type numbers have been pretty universally used since the early 80's even though there are far fewer ships and types in service.

What does my head in with this series (having started watching at season 3 and skipped the rest) is that they’re flying around in a ship which would be ~150 years out of date, but it’s presented in-universe as if it’s a brand new starship. It’s kind of like if TPTB had gotten their way and had the Akira class design used as-is for the NX-01 Enterprise, as was rumoured back then, but in the opposite direction…
