Physicists at CERN have recorded particles moving faster than light

Re: Physicists at CERN have recorded particles moving faster than ligh

I wonder why this has never been recorded before.

It might be cataclysmic news in the particle physics world but it's hardly going to set the heather on fire up here in great big chunky things world.

If you read the article, it tells you.

You know what they say, one particle's rock is another particle's tunnel.

Iguana just did a perfect example of someone laughing and weeping at the same time, whilst maintaining impeccable style throughout.

Just saw this, interesting news so far.

My thoughts on the neutrino anomaly:

The muon neutrinos are travelling faster-than-light from our perspective but NOT from their own.

Neutrinos that travel FTL from their own perspective would travel back through time - as per special relativity - meaning, they would arrive at OPERA before they were launched from CERN, not after (even faster-than-light after).
Also, such neutrinos would radiate positrons and electrons as Cherenkov radiation - which, as IKAROS and OPERA showed, does not happen.

But how can neutrinos travel FTL only from our perspective and not from theirs?

By generating a negative space-time curvature (the reverse of a gravitational field).
Which means, what for us, outside this negative space-time curvature is 1 second, for the neutrinos is a little more than a second (due to time curvature).
As a consequence, what for the neutrinos is near-light-speed, for us is faster-than-light.

If this is correct, it means energetic muon neutrinos generate negative energy - which is the last piece needed for wormholes, warp drives, etc to be theoretically possible:devil:.
Fingers crossed.

Let's see if the OPERA results are confirmed - then it will become really interesting.

So, neutrinos are a potential source of dark energy as well as dark matter perhaps?

Neutrinos may be a factor in both dark energy and dark matter, indeed.
But I doubt they are the only factor - dark matter and dark energy are both massive effects.

Neutrinos may also be the cause of the so-called 'dark flow', - streams of travelling muon neutrinos being responsible for this effect.

Re: Physicists at CERN have recorded particles moving faster than ligh

We still need independent confirmations by other laboratories in other locations.

Re: Physicists at CERN have recorded particles moving faster than ligh

Hell yeah, in addition to dark matter, why not add dark velocity into the mix?

But they didn't. They just arrived sooner than predicted.

This is presuming that special relativity is correct!

Obviously.
As I already showed in my previous post. Have you even read it in its entirety?

Re: Physicists at CERN have recorded particles moving faster than ligh

I just caught the end of this thread and haven't read the article, but has the possibility been raised that neutrinos travel at the "speed of light," but that light appears to travel slower because it's more interactive with matter, including all the virtual particles between point A and point B-- in other words, that photons get absorbed and re-emitted so many times that it adds to the travel time?
