photoshop the Borg cube?

DontFeedPhil

Fleet Captain
Hi,
This thread has to do with The Borg. Not really the borg but their ships. Specifically the borg cubes seen in BOBW 1 and 2 as well as the ship in the episode that Q threw the ent way into borg territory to show the Federation what was out there?
I was always facinated at the way it looked like random pipes and conduit running in and out of main body of the ship. Well after studying it for a while I determined that in order to make a ship like that for myself (to drive around in (JK)) I should use the same source material that the people on the show used to create the ship. Mainly pictures of oil refineries and natural gas plants. It appears to me that they took abunch of these images and weaved them all together and did a bunch of blending in and there you haveit. A real looking Borg Ship.
Has anyone ever done this? I have almost No photoshop skills.
Does anyone have any pointers?

So has no one tried this before? Can I just go dl some pics from google image search and start assimilating? Can I post those same pics on here?

Well - maybe they used models, and used a bunch of junk model parts and entire sheets of model kit parts.

I suspect the model makers made good use of the runners plastic model parts are attached to when the kits are manufactured. Those runners not only serve to keep the parts in a cluster for packaging, they distribute the liquid plastic to the various mold cavities during the casting process. The appearance of the cube surfaces would also be consistent with things like paper clips and formed sections of electrical wire.

It's amazing what can be done with some spray paint on ordinary objects like kabob skewers, PVC plumbing parts, plastic coffee stirrers, model car kit wheel covers and those little containers from the grocery store lobby vending machines. You can even make model storage tanks from the spray paint can tops.

Don't forget that Dr McCoy aqquired a new set of medical "instruments" when there was concern the audience wouldn't recognize the ultra modern salt shakers the prop department bought for the TOS "Man Trap" episode (they filmed the scene using a shaker from the studio commissary).

Most of the original BOBW Borg cube was made of model parts sprues, with some in-joke kit parts scattered throughout. (The photo of the cube model in the Christies auction catalogue shows a Constitution-class starship deflector dish buried in the pipes.)
