My favorite photo of me and my nephew--about 10 years ago. He's now a depressed, rebellious, sullen teenager. But here, we were very close and he was a surprisingly happy kid. His mother (my oldest sister) had abandoned him for a crack house, his stepfather couldn't cope and had nervous breakdown and the biological father was a major jerk. My elderly parents took the boy in and I moved in with them, temporarily, to help out. I became his caretaker, more or less, for the next year, even though the biological father had legal custody. That Christmas, when the little guy was still obsessed with trains, was one of the best. It was my parents, me and the little guy and a house full of animals. It was great, despite the circumstances.
Two of my favorite toys from when I was a kid. One was a gift from my grandparents and I think the other was Santa one year. Both are waiting to be fixed up a bit and then displayed in my home.
Bats are fascinating creatures. Growing up, the kids in my neighborhood (and I) would spend summer evenings throwing tennis balls up into the air and watching as bats would track them.
As for hugs ... would an imminent bear hug count?
Next (in honor of the bat): something from the night time.
